Recently I looked at 2 houses in the Charleston Meadow tract in Palo Alto. The sheet one realtor had said that one I looked at was built in 1950. Eichler Network's story on this area says 1951. Either way this area is almost an achealogical dig site for the early years of Eichler homes. The 2 I looked at were the same model, 1200 sq ft, 3 Bedroom, master bath facing the street, no garage, with a carport. They still have back walls of glass, exposed beams, and radiant heat. Not much else similar to other Eichlers though. It looks like some of the homes in this area are the AA-1 Anshen and Allen model which are found in the Sunnyvale Manor Addition tract.
There are a few other models in this tract, one of which I looked at a few months ago on Carolina. That one was in bad shape, it smelled moldy and needed a new roof, new roof beams, new plumbing, new electrical, I can only imagine the shape of the foundation and the radiant heat. The back glass looked ok though and of course the beautiful style was obvious. But it was $699K and looked like for $100K it could be brought back to liveable condition. I was sad to drive by yesterday and see it completely torn down. They don't make 'em like that anymore.
Charleston Meadow is a track of about 200 houses which is west of the train tracks next to Alma, on both sides of Charleston in southern Palo Alto. Map below. |
