Set 500 years in the future after a
universal civil war, the crew of a small transport spaceship
will take any job that comes their way, most of them illegal
and/or dangerous.
The diverse characters come to life in this 2-hour Pilot script: Mal, the captain of the 'boat', played by Nathan
Fillion, is a combination of a man of honor, bravado,
fatalism and doggedness that any good western hero, or anti-hero
should posess. Gina Torres played
the soldier Zoe who has fought alongside Mal and has a
strong bond with him. She is married to the ship's pilot, Wash,
played by Alan Tudyk.
Morena Baccarin played the companion Inara, who likes to point out to each paying client that
she chose them. Adam Baldwin played
the gun-loving Jayne, the ship's wild card and tough guy.
Jewel Staite played the cheery and vulnerable mechanic, Kaylee,
who keeps the ship Serenity going. Sean
Maher played the young doctor on board, Simon and Summer Glau was his dangerously psychic
sister, River. Ron Glass plays Shepherd Book, a holy man with a past and a gives
great advice in times of stress.
