Welcome to the Michael Genealogy and Tartan Society. This site is an attempt to organize an effort to decide on a single family tartan for all those bearing the surname Michael, Carmichael, MacMichael, MacGillemichael, etc., who trace their lineage to Appin, Argyllshire, Scotland. My name is John Michael. I live in Arkansas, U.S.A., and I am a member of the Clan Stewart of Appin by descent from my fifth great-grandfather, Daniel Carmichael of Appin. On the left you will find links to various pages on this site. Philosophy is an explanation of the purpose behind the endeavor to choose a Michael tartan. Michael Genealogy takes you to a site outlining my family history and the descent of Daniel Carmichael and his first wife, Margaret Monroe. This will be a place for other Michael, Carmichael, MacMichael family members to submit their own family files to be included on the site. Our Links To Scotland provides information about the concept of tartan, our link to Clan Stewart of Appin, and displays some tartans sometimes associated with the surnames Carmichael, MacMichael and Michael. Proposed Tartans displays the proposed tartan designs for the Michael family tartan. How You Can Help details the guidelines for designing a tartan for submission and how you can submit an original tartan design to be voted on as a possible Michael family tartan. The Links Of Interest section on the left is a collection of links which you will find helpful and interesting when learning about our Scottish heritage.
