This beautiful wood screen divides the servant's room, servant's stairs, third floor door, and toilet room from the main hall. No work was needed to restore this woodwork. It has all been beautifully preserved. Behind the camera is the sitting hall. The ceiling is painted dark almond, the top wall is olive green with metallic gold over it and below the black stripe is a dark red. This stencil pattern is inspired by the Associated Artists and L.C. Tiffany, Candace Wheeler, and Samuel Coleman.
I drew out the stencil after and sent it to be cut out on Mylar Paper by using the company Stencilplanet.com. Since I was forced to use oil based paint for the gold (the only paint to go on in one shot), I needed a solid stencil that i can scrub clean. For cornerd and other small spots, I cut out the pattern on a wax like stencil paper that can fold around much easier. To the left you can see the stenciling project beginning. and to the right, it is complete.

Please note: One thing to remember - many Victorians loved to mix all cultures, furniture, pictures, screens, stenciling and knick knacks together. Have a look at some of the books that show interiors in the late 19th century for the high middle class and rich. It is an absolute explosion of culture and design. Also, these homes were very dark. With the dark colors of the 1870's and 1880's and the only source of lighting was gas, or oil lamps, you had dimly lit rooms. The shiny paints certainly reflected light.
Below s a picture of me stenciling! Note the black stripe has no pattern on it.
