History of The Miami Devil Rays |

In the Fall of 1998, the Miami Devil Rays started in the South Florida Baseball League, the same season that the Tampa Bay Devil Rays entered the majors as an expansion team. The Devil Rays' name was chosen with the idea in mind to give the team the challenge of making it to the playoffs, and on to the championship prior to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays making it.
In only their second season, the Miami Devil Rays managed to finish with a 7 - 5 record and enter their first playoffs, taking 2nd place in their division. They lost to the Spring 1999 Dade County Champion Bellsouth Rangers in the first round, however, team enthusiasm, spirit, and unity carried strongly to their next season.
In the Fall of 1999, the Miami Devil Rays finished 1st in their division with a record of 8 - 4 and went on to win the Dade County Title beating the Dade County National League Champion Miami Giants. The Miami Devil Rays, in the South Florida Baseball League Championship game, suffered a devastating loss to the long standing SFBL Champion South Florida Seadogs. With a 3 - 1 lead in the 8th inning, the South Florida Seadogs managed a 2 out rally to take the lead in the bottom of the 8th 4 - 3. This would prove to be the final.
In the Fall of 2000, the Miami Devil Rays had their best season yet in terms of regular season finishing 11-1. Our only loss was to our "NEW" arch rival, the Miami Phillies. This game meant nothing as we entered the playoffs with the best record in the league. After beating the Angels for the second time, the Devil Rays moved to the American League Playoffs to face the Diamondbacks. After a very rough start, the Devil Rays came back strong, but not strong enough. A 12-6 finish sent the Devil Rays packing and sending the Rays towards a rebuilding season. |

As the Devil Rays entered the Spring 2001 season, many new faces arrived from pitching to infielding, from catcher to outfield. This season would be a rebuilding season, filling in the holes and working towards another championship. Starting out rough with a .500 record at 3-3, the Devil Rays made a run for the title. Winning the next 5 in a row, only losing one more to the Diamondbacks, the Devil Rays went into the Playoffs with an 8-4 record. These 4 loses were for a total of 5 runs. Most games ended in the 9th making for a very exciting finish EVERY TIME.
In the first round of the playoffs, the Devil Rays faced the Phillies. For the first time in their history, the D'rays sent the Phillies PACKING after a 14-12 victory. The tide has turned.
In the second round, the D'rays lost a heartbreaker, again in the last inning, to the Cardinals eliminating any chances of another trophy. |

As the Devilrays entered the Fall 2001 season, the coaches polls put the Devilrays in the top teams to make it all the way. As predicted, the Devilrays finished strong with a 10-2 record. In their wake on the way to the championship was all but one team: the Diamondbacks. Both in the regular season, as well as the playoffs, the Rays could not manage to stay on top of leads in both games. With a 2 run lead in the 6th, the D'backs put together several hits. This, along with several defensive errors, left the Devilrays to far gone to catch up. Once again, a second round defeat to the mighty D'backs. Well, with the Premier league coming next season and a rebuilding season again for the Rays, only time will tell. GO RAYS. One final note, Congratulations to Freddy Bermudez for winning the Batting Title and to Moises Gomez who won the Cy Young award. Thanks to both of you for making for an exciting season. |

Now we enter the Spring 2002 season in the ALL new PREMIER division. With many changes to both the defensive and offensive line-ups, things should be interesting. The coaches poll put the D'rays ranked 9 of 10. With the breakdown of divisions as they are, this season should prove to be very exciting.. There is not one team that cannot come out on any given Sunday and win. With the returning champion Phillies and the Rangers in our division, placing 1 or 2 to get into the playoffs will be a task for any team. Good thing the D'rays like it this way. Beat the best to be the best!!! Good luck to all the Premier teams, you're gonna neet it!!! |
