Spring 2002 Scores & Highlights
Game 1 Highlights
Opening day was against the Miami Yankees. Although we came up short, there was much to happy with.  The Devilrays new starter, Alex Arteaga, did very well in his debut.  He was able to keep the Yankees down after relieving Danny Garcia after 3 innings.  From that point on, Alex beat the Yankees.
Offensive production was adequate to win, but too many defensive errors cost us the game.  Multiple hit day recorded by Brian Stone and Rene Leonard.  Freddy Bermudez hit his first out for the year.

Final Score:   Miami Yankees  15          Miami Devilrays    8

RECORD:  0 - 1

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK:
Rene Leonard          2-3, 2B, SB
Brian Stone              2-3, R, SB

Game 2 Highlights
This week the Devilrays face the Bellsouth Rangers in a game that would prove to be such a high scoring game, that many were asking if it was a football score.
Well, although improving, the Devilrays showed much of the same this week.  Defense improved slightly, but offense was non-existent until late in the game.
The Rangers started Javier Calero, ex-Devilray, and he shut the Devilrays down for 5 straight innings.  I think he retired 10 of 16 by strikeout.  The only highlight offensively for the Rays during Javier's stint on the mound was Ryan Ennis taking Javier YARD for a 3 run blast.  This only put the Rays out by 6 runs.
After Calero's exit, the Rays bats woke up producing 13 total runs.  This was not enough. Alex Arteaga for the Rays threw his heart out only giving up 4 earned runs, however, with 18 runs scored (on errors), it proved to be too much to overcome.

Final Score:      Bellsouth Rangers   18         Miami Devilrays    13

RECORD:  0 - 2

Game 3 Highlights
Game 3 was against the Miami Diamondbacks.  In this game, there was nothing really to write about.  For only the second time in Devilray history, the D'backs mercy ruled the Rays 10-0 in 7 innings.
This time the defense held up, but the offense never showed up to play.  With bases loaded 4 times in 7 innings, and twice with less than 2 outs, the Devilrays could not manage to get even one run to cross the plate.
All I can say is that the Devilrays have 9 games to improve before facing the D'backs in the final week of the season.

Final Score:     Miami Diamondbacks   10       Miami Devilrays   0

RECORD:  0 - 3

Game 4 Highlights
This week the Devilrays were to face off against the South Beach Bombers, however, the coach of the Bombers could not get enough players together.  To avoid the forfeit, the Devilrays took a game with the MABL UM Dodgers.
This was the best offensive and pitching day the D'rays have had yet.  Alex Arteaga and Kenyon West combined for an 11-1 win.  Offensive production came from everywhere!!  Multiple hit day recorded by Ryan Ennis (2nd HR of the year and this one was in the PARK), Pete Enriquez, and Kenyon West.
The only conclusion that can be drawn from this game is that the Devilrays definately belong in the PREMIER League.  How well they will do is the question.

Final Score:  Miami Devilrays   11         UM Dodgers   1

Game 5 Highlights
Well this one was interesting.  The mighty, mighty, Cardinals were not so mighty today.  They brought their bats, but left their pitching at home.  On the other hand, Moises Gomez was back for the Devilrays ready to bring another one home and give the Devilrays a two game winning streak.
Brian and Kenyon each had a multiple hit day with Moises, Evan, and Pete each with one.  Ed Cooper and Fred Krochmal led the team with 2 runs scored each.  And they say the big men on this team can't run.  Evan had two stolen bases on the day, back to back, to score and break open what wa a very close game.
But the real story was the return of Moises to the mound.  Although our defensive has room for improvement, Moises made sure that we stayed, not only in the game, but ahead throughout.
Now that the Devilrays have won two in a row, they have given themselves a legitimate shot at the playoffs.  Next week, with the Coral Gables Athletics, we will find out how badly the Rays want it.

Final Score:  Miami Devilrays   6         Miami Cardinals   4

Game 6 Highlights
This game was interesting.  The Devilrays held their own and had tied it up at one point late in the game.  But in the bottom of the 8th, the A's struck hard with three more runs to put this one out of reach.

Game 7 Highlights
Great day all around.  Pitching, fielding, and hitting were all there today for the Devilrays.  Moises Gomez and Alex Arteaga combined for 8 innings.  Alex came in to close them out.
Offensively, the Devilrays put up 9 hits lead by Ryan Rothenberg.  Ryan had 3 hits on the day.  Now, the Devilrays have a shot at second place as they face the Phillies next week.

Final Score:  Miami Devilrays   9              South Beach Bombers  2

RECORD:  3 - 4

Game 8 Highlights
As game time approached, there were no Phillies in site.  At 9:30AM, when the game was to begin, the Phillies only had 7 players.  Despite the rules, the umpire decided to let them bat (lucky for them they were visitors) and give them the 1/2 inning to produce another player.  Missing their starting pitcher and 3-5 hitters, the Devilrays still managed to put 9 on the field.  6 runs later and at 10:10AM (after a 20 minute grace period), the Phillies finally produced an eighth player.
Based on SFBL rules, this game should have never played, however, the Phillies did "their thing" to the umpire who obviously did not know the rules either.
It was obvious to both teams that the Devilrays coach was not happy with this decision, but played the game to avoid conflict and planned on protesting the game based on simple facts-you need 8 to play.
When it was all said and done, the Phillies won and the Rays left in disbelief as the game was cut short by the same amount of time used earlier to give the Phillies the opportunity to play.

The decision by the 'protest committee' was to let the game stand.  This decision has opened up a can of worms.  Now, when convenient, the rules can be broken, 7 men can play a game, and, if you are the Phillies, you'll do anything to win!!!

Final Score:  Miami Phillies  12          Miami Devilrays  3
