As Toastmaster of the day Katharine Hadow (photo) pounds the gavel, another 50-minute Toastmasters session comes to order. The Murray Hill Speakers Club (MHSC) is a community-based organization affiliated with Toastmasters International, a worldwide public speaking and leadership club. “My main goal is to improve my public speaking and leadership skills by practicing within a community of people who have the same goal and are dedicated to providing each other with support, encouragement, and constructive criticism,” says Martin Finston, who has been with the club for 12 years. “The club has given me more self confidence when speaking in public, more skill at writing and delivering speeches, and better understanding of how people work together in groups,” he adds.

MHSC was founded in May 1961 as a corporate club for AT&T employees. In 2001, the club opened its doors to outside members to share the renowned Toastmasters educational program with more people. MHSC was a Distinguished Club two years in a row (2001 and 2002) and a Select Distinguished Club in 2003, two distinctions that demonstrate the club’s commitment and dedication to improving the speaking and leadership skills of its members. The club also has a Mentor Program, matching experienced club members to new ones in order to guide them through the first few speech assignments and to provide valuable advice. Based in the Lucent Technologies Headquarters building in Murray Hill, New Jersey (Room 6A101A), the members meet every week, on Wednesdays, from 12:10 to 1:00 p.m.
