IBM's OS/2 is one of the best designed operating systems. Nevertheless, it
has lost the operating system war against Microsoft. One of the main facts are missing
office software products or software ported from Windows 3.x to OS/2
without using any feature of OS/2 (See AmiPro 3.0, which is usable now, with computer
power 4 to 6 times faster as when it was developed.) |

Linux has one of the most interesting stories in computer history. Linux is a freely available (including source code) operating system
for nearly every kind of computer system. Ports for Apple, Alpha, Amiga, Atari, Next,
MIPS, PowerPC, PA/Risc and more are available. See the homepage of linux: http://www.linux.org |

Linux is the best known free operating
system, but there is another one available: NetBSD.
NetBSD is in many parts the father of linux drivers. XFree is one example of this
relationsship. NetBSD is inovative. New features and hardware is very fast implemented in
NetBSD. USB is one example. NetBSD is able to use USB devices since July 1998, Linux
isn't. |
| Apple Mac OS is one of the most interesting operating
systems. It is one of the oldest graphical user interfaces (GUI). It has many features not
found in other operating systems for years like build in multimedia functions. Apple is
about to end the Mac OS history. A new operating system codename "Rhapsody" is
on the way. It will also be available for x86 computers. Be aware of it. It could have the
power to change to market. |

BeOS is a new operating system. BeOS is developed for rendering, animation, real time video
and multimedia. It has absolutely compatibility workarounds and is lightning fast. It is
object oriented and has features like multi monitor support and more. Nevertheless it is
leaking office software and is to expensive for "playing" with it. |
Yes, here it is Microsoft Windows. Microsoft and IBM cancelled their
plan to develop OS/2 together. IBM continued developing OS/2 and Microsoft announced
Windows 3.0. Windows 3.0 was the starting point of the most powerfull company in the
computer market: Microsoft. |

Nothing to say
about this one: The leading operating systems for home and office computers
(unfortunately). |
If you use Windows 95 "A", you
should update to this new Windows Version. It has several updates, including FAT32
support. The USB features are also very interesting. But if you already have Windows 95
"B" (OSR 2.x) it is not necessary to update to Windows 98, because there are no
"real" enhancements. |

Windows
NT was the first Microsoft operating system, which was capable of using the priviledge
levels of the x86 CPU's by hard. It is really nearly impossible to bring Windows NT into
trouble with normal software. But the other way round, it is really complicated to write a
device driver for NT. |
Windows CE is the answer from Microsoft for
handheld computers. It is not yet the market leader, but it is on the way... It has the
same look and feel as Windows 95 and can be used on small computers. It was developed
especially for PDA's but can also be used for video recorders, washing machines and more. |

PalmOS is the most important operating system
for handhelds. It has a big community of freeware and shareware programmers and commercial
software is also available. The only real problem is: It is only available for one
platform, the PalmPilot from 3Com. |
Do you know GEOS?
It was the advanced operating system for your C64? You've had Geoworks Ensemble on your
PC? ... okay, these times are over. But GEOS is alive! See NOKIA's
Communicator 9000... GEOS 3.0 is the operating system of this really fascinating mobile
phone. |
