The best Operating System for PC's: OS/2 Warp?!

Why do I use OS/2? Oh, this is very easy to answer! OS/2 is the best Operating System ever. But everyone uses Windows except me... Ha, that's the point. Everyone uses Windows why should I use a System everyone uses? I don't like things that are used by everyone!

OS/2 will be definitly supported for the next 10 Years. That is the offical statement from IBM. The next version will possibly be released in early 1998. It will be Version 5.0, which will get the JFS from AIX, one of the most professional Filesystems on the market.
Then IBM will be a big step ahead of NT. There are rumours that it will pass the C2 security conditions (To be state of the art, like NT). It is planned to be developed for the "Connected Consumer", which is not the big market, Windows is developed for. Windows 98 will probably released after OS/2 5.0. IBM has given up the home market, because Windows 95 is the winner of this Operating System war.
IBM has recognized this and in Juny 1997 they officaly released the statement to end all activity in the home computer market. OS/2 is repositioned to be the Operating System for the High-End market.
Java and Citrix Winframe will help IBM to be able to serve this market. OS/2 will be able to run all business based applications, which will be written as Java Client/Server versions or Windows 95 and NT versions. Java and Citrix Winframe are the most important applications in this new OS/2 position.

The reason, why OS/2 has not won the war, are the not available programs and really worse drivers. The most PC hardware and software is not designed to work fine with OS/2, although, there are hardware and software developments, which are working fine. There are also some of them, you'll never find in any other Operating System in this stability and quality.
As a real fan I knew this and I want to tell you my experiences with some programs for OS/2, which will work with nearly all versions since 2.0

arrow.gif Tabellary overview over more than 50 'native' OS/2 programs including a small description.

I tested some software for OS/2 and I looked really deep inside to tell you what is "shit" and what is really cool. One thing, what makes OS/2 unique, are the numberless, often genius "Goodies", that you'll never find on any other system. You can find them here:

This is a link to a special OS/2 search engine for Goodies and Must-Have's!

IBM is chaotic in his advertising, straightness and strategy for OS/2, but nevertheless, the support for OS/2 is anything else then worse. There are actual Error Corrections (for free!), numberless upgrades, tools and enhancements that where formerly designed for IBM Internal use or released after a major release of OS/2. To use this utities legally, you probably need a licence for one version of OS/2. You can find some of them on the following links:

arrow.gif A full licenced version of Netscape Navigator 2.02 in 11 languages

Netscape Navigator 2.02 for OS/2 is internally the Version 3.0 and is Java 1.1 enabled. You only have to put a -3 parameter in the parameter line for Netscape. With this switch, Netscape 2.02 OS/2 tells that it is version 3.0 for OS/2, which will make it possible to use all features of Netscape 3.0 in OS/2.
Netscape Navigator for OS/2 is freely available to all licences of OS/2.

I think this could be named the "Offical OS/2 homepage".

It is recommended that you lookup on this site before you buy any hardware for OS/2. Here is all hardware that has been tested to work with OS/2.

arrow.gif Here are Links for OS/2 drivers and direct downloadable drivers for OS/2.

If there is a driver for anything, you'll find it here and nowhere else!

Here you can find national fixpacks for example. The German Visual Age C++ Fixpacks are also located here.

But not only IBM has written endless software for OS/2, there are also some Free- and Sharewareautors.

Here you can find anything ever freely released for OS/2. This is the German "Hobbes" server for OS/2!

arrow.gif Here is one of the best communication support programs, I've ever seen. ISDN-PM 2.9. A really wonderfull TCP/IP socket driver for ISDN CAPI 1.1.

ISDN-PM is as ZOC is, the Shooting Star under all the OS/2 Shareware Programs. An ISDN Protokoll stack for PPP, SLIP and German T-ONLINE!

arrow.gif Here you can find the newest version of ZOC, the best and robustest communication programs for modems and isdn, you'll find on the market (even Windows market).

ZOC is the best of the terminal emulations. The OS/2 version is just great. Only since version 3.x there is a Windows version available, too.
