Interior and Gauges

As you can see I went a little overboard with the gauges. The factory ones are so horribly inaccurate so I am glad I made the switch. With the exception of the Intellitronix digital clock (Please don't laugh at my glorified clock, I find it very useful.), all my gauges are Autometer Pro Comp series. Outside the car is a mechanical fuel pressure. That was the only gauge that was on the car when I got it. My first addition was the mechanical liquid-filled oil pressure and water tempature that are housed in the center A/C vent using the Autometer Gauge Works unit. It has side vents for blow by. Installation was not difficult. The biggest pain was getting a hole in the firewall big enough to pass the water tempature sender through. Tech Tip: I recommend not using the supplied retain for the A/C gauge holder. It caused my plate to warp. I used the retainers provided with the gauges themselves and used wire zip ties to keep the retainers close to the gauge housing.

The next gauge project was the a pillar. This houses a voltmeter on the bottom and the digital clock as mentioned previosuly. This install was a little tricky as there were many wires to send. The finished product came out good and I am happy with the results. The next project was the tachometer. I mounted the tach on the shelf on the dash. I found this was the most practical mounting position. I did have to drill a hole in the dash. Wiring was easy, just a matter of hooking up the wires. For a tach siganl, I used the output provided on the MSD 6A box.

To deliver power to the lights of the gauges I set up a 10 gauge line straight from the battery to a relay. I used a relay that came from the 88 four cylinder you've read about. For a power on, I tapped the brown wire in the headlight switch. At one point, I had all my gauges coming off this lead. It played havoc with my electronics and I scrapped that idea. The relay is the safest and most reliable way to do it. For a short time I had a 30 amp toggle switch mounted on the side of the gauge cluster but that was annoying when you wanted to take apart the dash.
