1988 4 Banger Disassembly
Taking apart the 88 was not very difficult. Since we weren't using anything from this car except the shell, we could be as careless as we wanted. This made things go very quickly. Wiring harnesses were cut wherever for conveinience of removal. A Milwaukee Sawzall was very useful here. Everything was taken out. Fuel lines, brake lines, radiator, brake booster, master cylinder, wheels and tires were all removed with no intentions of returning. We did have to remove the passenger fender in order to remove brake and fuel lines. There is also a vacuum canister for the 8 cylinder that needs to go here so removal of the fender was absolutely necessary. Some say that driver's side fender needs to be removed. We did not do this as the only things in that area are non essential. Cruise control, washer fliud reservoir and pump and horns are in there. We are attempting to reconnect the wiper fluid equipment and the horn but are not going to connect the cruise control. The cruise control throttle cable from the 4 cylinder is not long enough. If we wanted cruise control we would need to remove the fender. The massive 4 cylinder torque monster (heavy sarcasm right there) came out with ease. As done with the 302, we jacked up the tranny and removed the tranny and crossmember mount. Tech Tip: The crossmembers are different from both cars so you will need an 8 cylinder version. However, if you are are a welder or know a welder, you could remove the crossmember from the two cylindrical pieces where the bushings go in. Then, weld it in the necessary location. (Thanks to Darren Brune for this tip). Also, there are 4 bolts holding the engine in. Two are large and the other two are about 5/16 or 3/8. They are located right next to each other.
