The Engine

The engine I purchased was a 1988 Thunderbird Turbocoupe 2.3L EFI Turbo engine.
The factory rating on this engine was 190HP as it was the 5 speed model.

This is a similar engine to what is in the Mustang now but is fuel injected with forged internals and different compression ratio among a few other items.
The engine is capable of 300-400HP on stock internals, more if you throw more cash into it. A few drag race cars have run these engines with 600-800HP output on the stock block or a special SVO Tall deck block.

Here is the orignal owner pulling some stuff out of the donor car. A drunk driver crashed into him. I purchased the engine for $300

Here is the engine after I got it home. The Intercooler is not installed

This is the IHI turbocharger. Only was used on the 87/88 Turbocoupes and produced 18 PSI of usable boost pressure. This was a quick spool turbo.

This will be replaced with a larger unit after the swap is completed.

Ah fuel injection. This is a similar intake to the non-turbo model. A common modifcation to this is to port and gut the upper and knife edge the lower intake.

Oh yeah, it was painted silver...don't know what i'm gonna do about that.

The factory intercooler. Larger than the SVO model. Not sure what I'm gonna do about this. The Turbocoupe hood has vents to allow air to the intercooler.
When the time and money comes after the swap, a larger front mount intercooler will be installed.

This is the downpipe from the Turbcoupe. I got this so I don't have to worry about making an exhaust for now. After all is said and done, a 3 inch downpipe and exhaust will be installed.

The 87/88 Turbocoupes have Dual exhaust, the tail pipes were cut to allow for removal. Most likely I won't be adding any. I will most likely goto a 2.5-3 inch single exhaust.

Here is the inlet of the turbocharger. It spins freely, i'm hoping the blades aren't damgage, I haven't gotten to tearing anything apart really on the engine. Can't wait for that turbo whistle.
