| father, Torben Ulrich, who was a pro-tennis player. He achieved a top rank of the junior tennis players ,in Denmark. At the same time, Ulrich knew a thing or two about music, since his father ran a small jazz club that was heavily connected to Europes' jazz scene. Attending his first concert at age 9, inspired Ulrich to pursue music. At the age of 13, he received his very first drum kit from his grandmother. After the Ulrich family moved from Denmark to Newport Beach, California. He was no longer amoung the top junior tennis players, like he was in Denmark. But, fortunately, he had other plans. Ulrich Meets Hetfield: In 1981, Ulrich found himself a record deal on Brian Slagels' new Metal Blade label. The only obstacle was that Ulrich had no band. During all this Ulrich and Hetfield met up through ads in a newspaper. They met for the first time in Newport Beach, California. Along with the steps of Metallica being born, the most greatest creative partnerships in heavymetal was born. Then the two pulled a group together. With Lloyd Grant to help with lead guitars, Hetfield on vocals & guitars and Ulrich on drums. |
