Before Metallica: Worked at Burger King. Who He Was: Hammett grew up in the Bay area town of El Sobrante. As a young adult, he was quiet and introverted. His musical tastes, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff, Beck and Cream, set him apart from the other kids at the time. He bought his first guitar at age 15. Eventually, Hammett created, Exodus, with Paul Baloff. Exodus played cover songs from Thin Lizzy, UFO, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. Ironically, Metallicas' and Hammetts' first encounter, was when Exodus opened for Metallica twice. | being Exodus' manager before Metallicas'. Metallica asks Hammett if he wants to join and without hesitation, he joined. From that day in April 1983, Metallica has been Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett. |
