Adams, Kristin (Kristin Lehman)
- As in the PTL world, Kristin still dies in Boston in mid-1999.Her significant PTL episodes are: S3's the Enlightened One, Seduction, The Last Good Knight; S4's Unholy Congress, Sacrifice, the Portents. In the Merlynn's Maze world, she appears only in Death Watch.
Boyle, Maj. Robert Jonathan (Michael Moriarity) - The father of Nick Boyle.
In the Merlynn's Maze world, like his son, Maj. Boyle was the Security Chief for the San Francisco House and the Luna Foundation. To solve the name problem created by the show, he goes by "Johnny" Boyle... to avoid the nickname "Bobby" Boyle. His wife's name is Jean, which is revealed in Bladed Cross. He is a competent, complex man who was shaped by his own upbringing and by his experiences in Vietnam as a long-range reconnaissance officer involved in "black-ops" missions. As Derek explains more than once, he was a man who knew how to be a military officer, not a father. He gave Nick all he knew how to give... the gift of survival.
"Johnny" Boyle is intensely loyal to Derek and was Derek's teacher in such things as combat techniques, survival, explosives. He is respected by Sloan and has an ambiguous past with Ian Kincaid. He plays a principle roll in Al-Kufrah and Bladed Cross, while Barbara Rayne makes significant revelations about his character and his past in A SEAL's Legacy, part 50.
Boyle, Nicholas "Nick" (Martin Cummins) Nicks most significant episodes are: S1's the Fifth Sepulchre, Sins of the Father, Ghost in the Road, Do Not Go Gently(Where we meet an old girlfriend, Liz Barrows.), and Dark Priest; S2's New Guard, Black Widow, Finding Richter, The Devils Lighthouse, Silent Partner (Where we meet another old friend, who is deaf, and learn that Nick can sign.), and Trapped; S3's Father to Son, Debt of Honor, and the Covenant; S4's The Traitor, Double Cross, Brothers Keeper, Unholy Congress, Sacrifice, Shes Got the Devil in Her Heart, The Mephisto Strain, and The Beast Within.
Callaghan, Fr. Philip (Patrick Fitzgerald) - An Irish, Jesuit priest, who has separated himself from the San Francisco Legacy House prior to PTL's pilot episode, The Fifth Sepulchre. At the time Derek asks him to accompany the team to Ireland, he appears to be a parish priest somewhere in the San Francisco area. In S1, he seems to rejoin the the team, but evidentlyly once more departs for churchly duties before S2. His character reappears in S2 & S4 episodes. He did not appear in S3.
In the Merlynn's Maze stories, he figures prominently in Bladed Cross , where, as a young, idealistic, newly ordained priest, he meets Derek Rayne in a Dublin park and becomes his ally. Ultimately, he returns to San Francisco to join the Legacy and becomes the first of Derek's own team. His goal is to unravel the miracle that allowed Derek to survive "the Bladed Cross". He also takes part in A SEAL's Legacy, He Restoreth My Soul, and Death Watch.
His major PTL episodes are: S1's the Fifth Sepulchre (the pilot), the Substitute ; S2's Repentance ; S4's Unholy Congress and Sacrifice.
Corrigan, Katherine "Kat" (Alexandra Purvis) - The young, psychically gifted daughter of Rachel Corrigan. In the pilot episode, she seems to be about 8 years old. Therefore, by the end of the last season, she would have been about 11 or 12.
In the Merlynn's Maze world, other than perhaps being more musically inclined and having a closer relationship with Derek, Kat is much the same as in the "canon" PTL. She plays a large part in Ma?i.coh: the Skinwalker, Death Watch, where she is the heroine, and Ruminations I.
Corrigan, Dr. Rachel (Helen Shaver) - A psychiatrist, Rachel is basically the same person with the same, rather "bumpy" background as in the "canon" PTL.
Fitzgerald, Dominick (John F. Parker) - The majordomo of the San Francisco Legacy House. He made only three appearances in the series... all in the first and second seasons, in Fox Spirit, Thirteenth Generation, and Dark Angel. It is in Dark Angel that his file is shown on screen and we learn his last name.
"Dom" figures more prominently in the Merlynn's Maze world, having been in household service at Angel Island since being hired by Derek's father, Winston Rayne. He has known Derek since birth and will, when the occasion warrants, call him "young man" and give him a firm piece of advice. He considers it to be his special duty to keep the domestic end of the San Francisco House running smoothly and to act as Derek's valet.
It is possible that the Fitzgeralds are a longtime Legacy family. In Death Watch, we learn that his niece, Annie, was an Oxford classmate of Derek's, who vanished after the Legacy shut down Dr. Reston's time experiments.
In the parallel time line of Ruminations I, Dominick is instrumental in helping Derek get a few significant items out of the House before the final days.
Middleton, Arthur (Mavor Moore) - In the "canon" version, Arthur is a retired Legacy official, perhaps a former precept of the San Francisco House. His only appearance in the series is in the S4 episodes, the Traitor and Double Cross. The relationships are unclear, except that, twenty years before, at the time Derek Rayne killed Reed Horton, Arthur Middleton was Derek's superior. Also, since Derek chose to hide at Arthur's house, while he plotted his own salvation and revenge, the old man must have lived in the Bay area.
After the resurrected Horton kills Arthur in the Traitor, his accomplis, the demonic Mrs. Darkside, assumes the old man's identity in order to further entrap Derek.
Arthur Middleton only appears in the Merlynn's Maze world, in the S4 plot line of Death Watch. He is unmentioned in the parllel story line, so, like Franklin Cross, he may be assumed to be living.
In our world, Arthur was the San Francisco precept between Winston Rayne and William Sloan. While a Precept Emeritus, Arthur eased away from his position, leaving Sloan in active control until Derek was ready to take up the reins.
Moreau, "Alex" (Robbie Chong) - Virtually the same in both worlds. Apparently, around 1992 she came from Louisiana to attend graduate school somewhere in the San Francisco area. Derek Rayne was her faculty advisor, spotted her psychic talents, & recruited her to the Legacy. She seems to function both as the "researcher" & Derek's administrative assistant. She was raised by her grandmother, Rose Moreau, & has a sister, Tanya.
In the Merlynn's Maze world, we hope that she is virtually unchanged from the series. She figures most prominently in Ma?i.coh: the Skinwalker, the Heavenly Choir, Death Watch, and Ruminations I. To a lesser extent, she takes part in The Lord is My Shepherd and Interlude.
Her primary PTL episodes are: S1's the Tenement, the Signalman; S2's New Guard, Spirit Thief, the Devil's Lighthouse; S3's Darkness Falls, Light of Day, Stolen Hearts, La Belle Dame Sans Merci, Armies of the Night, Darkside; S4's The Possession, the Traitor, Double Cross, Body and Soul, Mephisto Strain, and the Beast Within.
Rayne, Christina (1831-1901) - A gifted psychic, Christina was the first Rayne to be born in San Francisco. She was the eldest child of Evan Rayne and his wife, Sarah Winston. She, rather than her brother, Winston Rayne I, succeeded Evan to become San Francisco's 2nd Precept.
At the age of thirteen, she wisely rejected a marriage proposal from Alta California's last Mexican governor, Gen. Manuel Micheltorena. Rayne brides traditionally wear the mother-of-pearl comb presented as a courtship gift by the General to young Christina.
Christina and Winston were sent to Europe to further their education and refine their social graces. In later years, while the her brother concentrated on compounding the Rayne fortune and building the estate on Angel Island, Christina focused on her work with the Legacy and collecting the books, artifacts, and antiquities, which became the foundation of the library at Angel Island and of the Winston Rayne Hall of Antiquities.
She is not to be confused with her ancestor Christina van Jevern, the wife of Thomas Rayne, nor with the friendly, rhyming spirit, Christina, who seems to favor the Christina Rayne's life in the Rayne Family History and the story of the Micheltorena comb appears in Al-Kufrah .
Rayne, Derek (Derek de Lint)
Rayne, Evan (1788-1861) - Derek's great-grandfather, the son of Emrys Rayne and his Cherokee shamaness wife, Adawehi. His mentor and father-in-law was Rev. John Winston, Precept of the Boston House. In appearance, Evan was much like his descendant, Derek Rayne, and was co-founder, with an earlier William Sloan, of the San Francisco Legacy House.
He purchased Angel Island when the US acquired California from Mexico and set about building a house on the foundations of an earlier Spanish fort. Evan established the Rayne fortune by resupplying whaling vessels that put in at Sausalito, then by outfitting "Forty-niners" for the California Gold Fields. His journals are cited in A Killing Time and Interlude. A more detailed bio of him may be found in the Rayne Family History.
Rayne, Winston (Daniel Pilon) - Husband of Barbara Rayne, father of Derek & Ingrid Rayne, perhaps Precept of the San Francisco House.
In PTL's pilot, Winston was killed when he opened the Fifth Sepulchre in Peru in 1969. Fifteen-year-old Derek was with him & was unable to prevent his father's death. However, but before he died, Winston gave his Precept's ring to his son said, "The burden is now yours". As the series progresses, the "spectre" of Winston Rayne returns again & again to haunt his son. Was he taken by the Darkside? Or was it a Darkside trick to weaken Derek's resolve? In the final episode, the Beast Within, it is again Winston's image that Derek faces one last time.
The Merlynn's Maze story, Chipotegives "our" full account of his death. His "presence" also figures prominantly in Ruminations II & Death Watch.
Sloan, William (Daniel J. Travanti) - William Sloan appeared in only five episodes of the second season (S2). Because he had a past with Derek, each installment was very revealing about San Franciscos Precept.
In the Merlynn's Maze world, his history with Derek has expanded. Building upon the series' detail that Sloan had been Derek's proctor at Balliol College, in "our" world, at both the request of Barbara Rayne & the orders of the Legacy, he assumes a semi-guardianship role when sixteen-year-old Derek enrolls at Oxford. He becomes a big-brother figure, whose authority is not always well received by his headstrong young charge, who is trying to cope with the death of his father & his own ordeal in Peru.
When Derek graduates from Oxford & joins the San Francisco House, Sloan is sent as its new Precept, to assist Arthur Middleton, who is in the process of retiring into the role of Precept Emeritus. The Legacy sees Sloan as the person to fill the role while the chosen candidate, Derek Rayne, matures and grows into the position.
When Derek becomes Precept in San Francisco, Sloan, by then married with a family, becomes Precept-at-Large, the Legacy's roving trouble shooter.
The adversarial, but deep friendship between Sloan and Derek shatters after the events of Al-Kufrah & Bladed Cross, when Derek discovers Sloan's role in the break-up of Derek's marriage.
However, in the Merlynn's Maze world, Derek still engineers Sloan's rise to Ruling Precept, even as he engineers Sir Edmund Tremayne's downfall from the position... & so behind the scenes, sets the stage for PTL's S2 events & his reconciliation with William Sloan.
In "our" world, because Sloan was alive when he entered the Sepulchres in the last episode of S2,Trapped, he was trapped in Limbo, a space that is neither here nor there, but between dimensions. When Derek is cast back into his own body at the end of Death Watch, Sloan is cast back into this world. He first makes himself known to Derek at the end of Fortune's Wheel... with unpleasant consequences for a very shocked Derek Rayne.
Since his position as Ruling Precept had been filled during his absence, he returned to his earlier position as Precept-at-Large. While both he and Derek recover from their experiences, the Ruling Council has placed Sloan at the San Francisco House, to assist its Precept.
Sloan, William, "the elder" - A character of the Merlynn's Maze world, he is the ancestor of the contemporary William Sloan.
In 1822, he and Evan Rayne, his niece's husband, arrived in what was then Yerba Buena to found the San Francisco Legacy House. Together they established a business at the whaling station of Sausalito, "Rayne & Sloan, Ships' Chandlers and General Merchants," which provided the underpinnings of the new Legacy House. This William Sloan and his wife passed were amongst the victims of the cholera pandemic of 1841. Their children were raised by Evan and Sarah Winston Rayne.
More details of his life are given in the Rayne Genealogy and Interlude.
Walker, Julia (Jordan Bayne) - Julia was a member of the San Francisco Legacy House in PTL's pilot episode, the Fifth Sepulchre. She was killed in April 1996 by the Azazel, the demon of the sepulchre, in Connemara, Ireland. She seems to have been Alex Moreau's best friend and to have had a romantic relationship with Nick Boyle. In the S2 episode, Black Widow, the succubus, Karen, assumes her identity to seduce Nick. Julia appears in the Merlynn's Maze world in SEAL's Legacy, when Nick joins the team.
