Here are some ideas to use for Project Linus blankets.
Patterns

Peppermint Puff

Sideways Shell
Size 40” x 36” Size I hook–You need about 20 oz. yarn,
variegated works well.

Gauge: 5 rows = 4 inches

Chain 145

ROW 1: Work 3 dc in 4th ch from hook, *skip 2 ch, work sc in next ch, ch 2, skip 2 ch,
work 3 dc in next ch, repeat from * across, ending sc in last st. Ch 3.

ROW 2: Work 3 dc in first sc, *skip 2 st, work sc in next st, ch 2, skip 2 st, work 3 dc in next st, rep from * across, ending sc in last st. Ch 3, turn. Repeat Row 2 until desired length.

DO NOT FINISH OFF. Continue around the corner and the remaining 3 sides of the blanket. Slip st at the end. Break off with 3 inches of yarn and weave in yarn ends.


Peppermint Puff
Materials: 4 skeins (Color A), 4 skeins White (Color B), 4 ply
Needles: Size H crochet hook or size to reach gauge below.
Gauge: 2 rows = 1-1/2”, 1 shell & 1 PS = 1-1/2” Finished Measurements: Approx. 36” x 38”

Stitches Used: Shell Stitch—5dc. Puff Stitch (PS)—(yo, pull up a long lp) 4 times, (9 loops on hook) yo, pull thru all lps, ch 1 to close PS.

With A, ch 116, loosely.
Row 1: (Wrong side) Sc in 2nd ch from hk, *sk 2 ch, 5 dc in next ch, sk 2 ch, sc in next ch, rep from* across row. Ch 3, turn.
Row 2: Work shell in center st of next shell, *PS in next sc, shell in next shell, rep from * ending dc in sc, drop A. Join B, ch 3, turn.
Row 3: 2 dc in first dc, sk 2 dc, sc in 3rd dc of next shell, *shell in top of puff st, sc in 3rd dc of next shell, rep from * across, 3 dc in top of turning ch. Ch 3, turn.
Row 4: 2 dc in first dc, sk 2 dc, PS in next sc, *shell in center of st of next shell, PS in next sc, rep from * across, 3 dc in top of turning ch, drop B. Join A, ch 1, turn.
Row 5: Sc in first dc, sk 2 dc, shell in top of PS, *sc in 3rd dc of next shell, shell in top of next PS, rep from * across row, sc in top of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. Repeat rows 2-5 until piece measures approx. 32 _”, ending with row 2, and Color A. Finish off.

EDGING: With B, starting at upper right corner, work as follows:
Row 1: *3 sc in corner sp, sc in ea st across top, work 3 sc in corner sp, keeping work flat, sc along side to corner, rep from * working across bottom & right side. Join in first sc. Ch 1, turn.
Rows 2-7: Sc in ea st, working 3 sc in corner st and turning at end of ea row. Finish off.
Row 8: With wrong side facing, attach A in corner st, ch 3, work 6 dc in corner st, (7 dc shell made), * sk 2 sc, sc in next st, sk 2 sc, work (5 dc shell) in next st, sk 2, sc in next st. Rep from * to corner, work (7 dc shell) rep from * around, join in top of ch 3, turn.
Row 9: Sl St to sc, pull up a long loop and wok PS, *work a shell in center of next shell, work PS in next sc, rep from * to corner, in corner shell, sk 2 dc, work 5 dc shell in next st, PS in center st, 5 dc shell in next st, sk 2 dc, work PS in next sc. Rep from * around. Join in top of PS. Finish off. Weave in all ends. Reprinted by permission of Caron International.


One Piece Blanket
Knits in one piece with chunky yarn. Size: approximately 36” x 40”
Materials: 5 x 100g balls machine washable chunky weight yarn (approx. 700 meters)
1 pair of 7mm needles (or 7mm circular needle, use back and forth, do not join).
1 crochet hook 7mm (or satin binding) to finish the edge of the blankets.

Cast on 110 stitches. Work even in pattern stitch (as below) until the 20 row pattern has been completed 9 times (total of 180 rows). Cast off.

Pattern Stitch:

Rows 1,3,5,7 and 9: Knit 10, *Purl 10, Knit 10, repeat from * to end of row.
Rows 2,4,6,8 and 10: Purl 10, *Knit 10, Purl 10 repeat from * to end of row.
Rows 11,13,15 and 17: Purl 10, *Knit 10, Purl 10 repeat from * to end of row.
Rows 12,14,16,18 and 20: Knit 10, *Purl 10, Knit 10 repeat from * to end of row.

Finishing:

Option1: With right side of work facing you, work 1 row single crochet around all the edges. Work 2 single crochets in the corner stitches and join. Fasten off. Block lightly (roll in a damp bath towel for a few hours) allow to dry.

Option 2: Block lightly (roll in a damp bath towel for a few hours) allow to dry. Sew satin binding around the edge of the blanket.


Blanket Pattern in Squares
Size: approximately 34” x 40”
Materials: 15 balls (50g) worsted weight yarn and 4.5mm needles. May be knit in one or more colors. Cast on 60 stitches.

Pattern for one square:

Rows 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 & 10: *Knit 10, Purl 10* repeat to end of row.
Rows 11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19 & 20: Purl 10, Knit 10* repeat to end of row.

These 20 rows complete the pattern. Complete the pattern 3 times (60 rows in total). Cast off. Make 15 squares.

Sew or crochet squares together. To complete the blanket, sew a blanket stitch around the edge in a contrasting color or crochet the edge.
