The Guru Nanak Eye Center. (GNEC)
GNEC houses the Maulana Azad Medical College Department of
Ophthalmology. Established on 20th December, 1977, it provides most
modern and sophisticated treatment for eye diseases free of charge.
It holds 184 beds, 4 operation theaters and independent eye OT with
facility for microsurgery. Various special clinics viz. Contact Lens
Clinic, Glaucoma Clinic, Fluorescent Angiography Clinic, Trauma
Clinic, etc. are also run by the hospital.
The hospital is currently being expanded to hold an additional 6 OTs
and 28 bedded special ward. 170,501 OPD patients and 8,679
inpatients came to GNEC during 1994-95. 7,493 major operations were
performed, out of which 5,841 were cataract extractions.
Animal House
(Perhaps this doesn't belong here, but I didn't want to put it under
'Facilities Available to Students'.)
The central animal house is engaged in the breeding, maintenance and
upkeep of experimental animals required for the purpose of teaching
and research work. A sizable number of different species of
laboratory animals of standard breeds/strains viz Mice, Rats, Guinea
Pigs and Rabbits are raised under controlled climactic conditions.
Also this supplies high-grade animals to sister institutions.
Experimental surgical and research procedures are carried out in the
same building.
