About the Program

Seventh graders who demonstrate exemplary citizenship and work habits can apply and be nominated by a teacher to become a mentor for the following school year.  From the beginning of your 8th grade year, you will mentor a group of five to seven sixth grade students, two to four times a month.  Topics that are discussed during this time include transitioning to middle school, establishing good work and study habits, understanding what extracurricular activities are available to get involved in, and learning what it means to be a R.E.A.L. Wildcat.

A student interested in becoming a mentor must be a positive role model, earn above a 2.00 grade point average, be kind and outgoing, and receive no discipline referrals.

Goals & Objectives of this Program

Helping others is only part of it- we want you to get something out of it too! In the mentoring program you will learn all about our school and how to maximize your own experiences at Pioneer, all the while learning valuable life goals to share with your sixth graders. In the mentor program we will focus building our skills in 3 key areas:

Knowledge: Mentors are required to have an awareness of school activities, as well as overall familiarity with the student binder reminder.  You must be good problem solvers who are able to think and explain information in more than one way.
Interpersonal Skills: Mentors must demonstrate effective skills in working collaboratively with your peers.  You also need to be able to assist the sixth grade student in learning communication and problem solving skills.
Organizational Abilities: Mentors must demonstrate abilities to manage tasks, maintain schedules, manage time, and guide the tutoring sessions so the sixth grade student will learn to study efficiently.

By the end of this program you will be able to:

  • Describe the extracurricular activities that are available on campus and how to get involved in each.
  • Set personal academic goals.
  • Describe the goal setting process to sixth grade students.
  • Identify and describe effective work and study habits
  • Explain how to effectively use the student binder reminder
  • Describe and Demonstrate the qualities of a  R.E.A.L. Wildcat
  • Identify the traits of an “invisible student”
  • Design an activity to approach and include an “Invisible Student”
  • Teach sixth grade students about making friends and dealing with conflict appropriately
  • Demonstrate active listening skills
  • Teach sixth grade students about time management skills
  • Demonstrate how to collaborate with peers on school projects

How does the Mentor Program Work?

Each week you will visit this website 1-2 full days prior to a scheduled mentoring day. Check the homepage for any updates or notes from the advisors, Ms. Egan or Miss Schaer. After that, click on the "prompts" link that will take you to a calendar of events.

Each event on the calendar will contain a link to the instructions for that activity. For every meeting with your sixth grade students you will complete a preparation activity, the prompt (to print and take with you to your meeting), and a reflection topic or activity after your meeting.
