"Academic Goal Setting"

Prompt for the week of September 5th

"GOALS ARE DREAMS WITH DEADLINES." - DIANA SCHARF HUNT

Prompt

      1.Check In Q & A (How are your 6th graders doing?) (5 minutes)

• How was the first week of school?  (Lockers?  Books?  Finding classes?)
• What did everyone do this weekend?
• Who’s trying out for Volleyball (tryouts begin today)?

     2.Goal Setting in Binder Reminder (FOR EVERYONE ☺) (15 minutes)

• Go to page 3 in the Binder Reminder.  You will be working only in the Quarter 1 section.  Talk about how you will all be doing this together each Quarter, and why goal setting is important (setting goals for yourself helps you accomplish good things in life; when your goals are written down you can always look back at them in order to stay focused; etc.)
• Everyone should write down their current classes (help them do this quickly). 
• Have everyone write down what grades they will work toward (Citizenship and Work Habits included...check out pgs 15 and 16 for hints). 
• Each student should write down a goal for each letter in the REAL acronym.  You can help them think of ideas by sharing the goal you’ve written down for yourself.
• If your sixlets do not finish this, have them finish it at home and make sure they are ready to show you they’ve completed writing down their goals next time you see them! 

     3. From this mentoring day on, all students (Mentors included) should be prepared with their Binder      Reminder and a pencil each time you meet.  Goals will be reviewed  periodically!

     4. If time permits, talk about the importance of the Magazine Fundraiser (we raise money for our school, and      you get fun prizes for doing so!).

• You are a guest in a sixth grade teacher’s classroom...be a good example so you are welcome to return
• Mentors + Sixth Graders = a LARGE group of students... whisper or speak quietly
