United

In true Barnstoneworth tradition the Club remains undefeated after the first round of competition. The mighty United headed along the dusty road to Millthorpe to take on the reigning premiers.

Unaccustomed to such warm autumn weather the forty pluses struggled for fitness but managed to hold the premiers to 0 - 0 at half time. Peruvian import Jose made a late first half appearance after all night negotiations with a potential distillery sponsor.

Having headed for the shade at half time the mighty United came out with all guns ablazing in the second term with former Brisbane Lions Pommeroo Steve Fabri leading the way in attack. Midway through the second term star midfielder Rob Young took advantage of a defensive error and slotted a powerful shot past the Millthorpe keeper. Sideline betting at the time was now how far over the posts but Young showed his class and took United to the head.

As the match clock counted down United seemed hell bent on self-destruction but the cool head of former Northern Spirit supporter and 'sack' Graham Arnold advocate Warwick Baines came to the fore. It wasn't until the final two minutes that the Weakest Link award, went to Club Treasurer Phil Hodges and Millthorpe's Wes McKenna scored the equaliser.

United would like to thank the Millthorpe Tigers for a great game and a fair result, and the Commercial Hotel for the after match function. The forty pluses were astonished at young, Dayne Grindley and Jon Lockwood's ability to chase down any loose balls and some were heard to say they would like some of the enthusiasm running through these bodies.

In a promising first outing the Barney Miller awards for the week went to Warwick Baines (3), Steve Fabri (2) and Robert Young (1).
