It would appear that Barnstoneworth Athletic finished their regular season one week before the actual end. They were comprehensively outplayed by Waratahs to go down 3-9 at Barnstoneworth Stadium on Saturday.
The last time they met, Barnies came out on top 2-1 which is what the result would have been if the second half only was counted. As it was, the 8-1 halftime deficit stood and the Barnies fans were left disappointed.
The only thing that fans of the Red & White will want to know is that the goal scorers race has finished with Chris Jacobs on top with 11 goals followed by Damien Priest with 10.
It is thought many players were more focused on next week's inaugural Barnstoneworth of Origin clash which should prove to be the highlight of the sporting calendar. The match will be back at the Stadium at Bloomfield and the intensity is building.
With the game a fizzer the big news of the week is the position of first time manager Ewan Powell. High level talks were held at the Sale St headquarters of Barnstoneworth and the manager's position was number one on the agenda.
A season that started with high hopes has come undone and it appears a scapegoat is needed. Powell himself is not full of confidence and when asked before the meeting responded "Look, I don't think they're really worried about my managerial side but rather that I'm out on the field. They might want me as manager but not manager/player."
It appears after the meeting that Powell is safe. Dan Kennedy, a foundational Director, said "At the start of the season we had to find someone dumb enough to take on the role. Ewan fitted the bill perfectly. We can hardy sack him now for displaying those qualities."
So it appears that Powell may well be back next year although there is talk that he will now have to pay for the privilege. An interesting year looms.
So to say farewell to Barnies for the summer the Barnstoneworth of Origin (BOO) should provide the perfect vehicle. The presentation night to follow will be one where the hair can be let down - for those players who still have hair at least. See you next week.
