Barnstoneworth Athletic utilised a sly strategy to overcome PCYC 15-1 at Brabham Park on Saturday. The last time these sides met, Barnstoneworth were lucky to win 2-0 so this time a strategy was required.

Team management tried to film the PCYC training to learn the tactics and the players to watch. When a camera could not be found or afforded it was decided to instead invite PCYC to train with Barnies. The plan worked perfectly as can be seen by the result.

The goals were too numerous to give individual accounts so the salient moments only shall be recorded. Damien Priest and Chris Jacobs have continued their duel as leading goal scorers with two goals each. This leaves Jacobs one ahead on 11 for he season.

Ed Cato scored his first for the season with a fine strike from a long way out. Trent Brown also made an impact coming up from his usual backfield for a superb strike that stunned the vast crowd.

All in all there were ten individual scorers with Phil Grant being the only one to miss out. This surpassed the 9 individual scorers against Kinross 3rds earlier in the season.

9-0 at halftime and things looked good until Bill Gayford defied the tight Barnies strategy to race away and score for PCYC. It was also great to see Ashleigh, after a timid start, blaze down the right and shoot from well outside the box only to see the ball just shave the post with the keeper well and truly beaten. A comeback was on the cards but was just as quickly snuffed out.

It should also be noted that the 2 Barnies subs in the first half unexpectedly disappeared. An unrelated event was PCYC finding 2 fresh players in the second half to give the side a full compliment of players.

The question remains as to whether this win will save the manager Ewan Powell for another season. We expect more news next week.

A final note for the diary is the Presentation Night and BBQ on 8th September following the match that day. Definitely not to be missed. See Ewan Powell or Phil Hodges for details.
