Along the Road
I walked a mile with Pleasure;
She chattered all the way,
But left me none the wiser
For all she had to say.
I walked a mile with Sorrow
and ne'er a word said she;
But oh, the things I learned from her
When Sorrow walked with me!
~Robert Browning Hamilton~

SORROW
I HAVE COME TO KNOW SORROW;
TO UNDERSTAND HER WELL.
SHE CLINGS TO ME THROUGH MOURNING,
AFTER A LONG NIGHTS QUELL.
I HAVE COME TO DREAD SORROW;
TO FEAR HER STORMY SEA.
AS I HANG ONTO A LIFEBUOY,
SHE BUILDS A CREST FOR ME.
I HAVE COME TO PRIZE SORROW;
TO RECOGNIZE HER WORTH.
SHE MAKES RARE JOY MORE PRECIOUS,
AND OPENS JEWELS OF MIRTH.
I HAVE COME TO MARK SORROW;
TO APPRECIATE HER SPAN.
THROUGH MY LIFE'S SHORT HISTORY,
SHE HAS FIRMLY HELD MY HAND!
