By the
edge of the cliff, with the Salk Institute on one side and the vast expanse
of the Pacific on second, the undulating landscape of Cancer Care Institute
meanders towards the ocean. This is aimed at tempting the visitor to experience
the edge and exploring the space beyond, & forms the basic approach
to the design.
The program has been designed to animate the landscape by coalescing it with the built form by using glass. A series of horizontal interwoven 'strips' inhabit the programs with earth and glass, forming the edges, juxtaposing into each other and creating a flow of space from interior into exterior. The 'strips' rise off the landscape, and into each other with deliberate shifts, resulting in a play of changing spaces and views, and creating new experiences and sequences for the user, while moving from one zone to the other. Their dynamic weaving fabricates spaces by the curvilinear shift, which trickles down to shallow undulated forms, bridging the gap towards the ocean. The atrium spine, which forms the core of the program, becomes the center-stage, and displays a grand spectacle of the expanse beyond the cliff. The program is distributed into zones for public, private and staff. The staff has been kept near the urban edge while the retreat, which is close to the ocean is separated from the other zones. |
