Chichen Itza
Two hoorah's for my internal alarm clock. Everybody, Hip
hip, hoorah! Hip hip, hoorah! *sigh* Don't feel like cheering for
me? You guys are so unsupportive. *grin*
My internal clock woke me 5 minutes before 0630, which is 5
minutes before I had wanted to get out of bed. I got up and showered,
then woke Matt up and slathered on some sun screen while I waited for
him to get ready. We turned in our key, got some directions from that
same nice man, and set off down the road for Chichen
Itza. It was an incredibly short walk. I think it only took us 20
minutes from the hotel, so we had about half an hour to kill before the
park officially opened at 0800. As luck would have it, admission is free
on Sunday, so we didn't even have to pay. I was thrilled to be there before
all the crowds had arrived, but my stomach wasn't so happy. I don't know
what it's revolting against, and it's not telling me. If only it would
tell me, I'd never do it again!
But to get back to less ... personal things, we wandered all
over Chichen Itza, climbed
El Castillo, and made my way rather nervously down using the guide
rope. We even waited and went inside El Castillo to see the inner pyramid
and the jaguar statue. And of course, shutter bug that I am, I took tons
of pictures.
My tip for the day: don't become so immersed in getting that
perfect shot that you don't pay attention to where you're going. I made
that mistake, and now I have 2 good scrapes and a bruise on my inner foot
to show for it. Between that, my stomach troubles and this mysterious
rash that I've developed over the past few days, I feel like a walking
bulletin on things you shouldn't do in Mexico.
But just so all of you out there know what a frugal traveler
I can be, take a gander at this:
| Cost for Chichen Itza |
| 2, 2nd class bus tickets: |
130 pesos (5 hr ride) |
| 1 room hotel for 2 people: |
150 pesos |
| Entrance fee to Chichen Itza: |
free on Sundays |
| Lunch for 2 people: |
155 pesos |
| 2 return bus tickets: |
130 pesos (4 hr ride) |
| |
|
| |
565 pesos/2 people -> |
| |
284.50 pesos/person |
The tours were all asking at least 51 US dollars per person, nearly double
what we ended up paying. Now who's the budget traveler! :-)
