Traveling to
Chichen Itza
After entirely too much discussion, it was finally decided that
just Matt and I would be "roughing it" by not taking the guided
tour from our resort to Chichen Itza. There were some delays and a couple
of moments of anxiety for me when we got stopped at the Merida/Quintana
Roo border and checked for identification. Matt showed his driver's license
and that was apparently enough for both of us. Phew! I guess I don't look
Mexican after all. *grin* We ended up in a little town called "Piste",
which is roughly 1.5 km west of Chichen Itza - we hope to walk it in about
30 minutes tomorrow morning.
We're renting a room at a little hotel for just $15.00 for the
2 of us. The cutest little old man showed us our room. It's clean and
simple, we have our own bathroom and we even have a ceiling fan that spins
entirely too fast, threatening to come loose and embed itself in the wall
sometime during the night. Great, huh? :-) Unfortunately no wake up call,
but maybe my internal alarm clock will be sufficient.
Oh, 2 tips before I retire for the night:
- The bus ride from Cancun was 5 hours, not the 2.5 to 3 hours advertised,
because we ended up taking somewhat of a commuter bus that of course
stopped everywhere. And,
- Do not sit in the last row of the bus. The engine seems to
be right underneath: you almost literally get baked, and you can smell
the exhaust fumes. The bus was air-conditioned, but I was starting
to feel dizzy from the fumes and although my head wasn't too warm,
my legs were sweating. It was a really strange experience, and not
one that I would recommend to others.
Here's hoping my internal alarm clock will wake me up in the
morning! Tune in tomorrow for the further adventures of danger girl and
boober boy. *Grin*
