Swimming with the fishies
Another early morning for Maya. Wake up call at 0700, after which I promptly fell back asleep, though I set my internal snooze for 0730 - can you believe it actually worked? *grin* And I'll apologize in advance for any disjointed ramblings - I've had 3 midori sours and 2 shots of tequila. Sound like a good excuse? I thought so. ;-)
I had to get up that early because we all went on a "cruise" today to Isla Mujeres. The main event of the cruise was the snorkeling. That was potentially lots of fun, but there were of course too many people, just like my trusty guidebook said. I kept bumping into everybody as I tried to take pictures of the fish. :-( The water, though, was crystal clear (or nearly so), and I got to see fish that I usually only see through the glass of an aquarium. It was alot of fun, there were just too many flippers and bodies getting in my way.
After the snorkeling and the included lunch, we were set loose on the island for roughly 1.5 hours to do as we pleased. I had read about an abandoned fortress of sorts on the other side of the island, so I and 2 friends rented some bikes and set out for adventure. Unfortunately the island was a bit more hilly than I was expecting, and we didn't make it to El Garrafon - we ran out of time and were quickly running out of energy as well. There's nothing like trying to bike at a good pace with the sun beating down on you! Biking in Holland just doesn't prepare you for that. *grin*
I was, as can be expected, ravenous around dinner time and enjoyed my meal immensely. The after-dinner show was also quite entertaining, and I had a great time making a fool out of myself with the audience- participated final dance. The older man next to us I had seen at dinner before, and he really knew the moves. Watching him gave me and Matt the courage to stand up and try it ourselves.
The rest of the day was pretty unmemorable. I got a souvenir picture of me taken underwater while snorkeling, and somehow managed to spend $40. How the heck did I do that? Those 2 tequila shots are calling me to bed, though, so I must bid thee a fond farewell.
Buenos noches!
