As early as the 15th Century, Scottish records depict striped or checkered cloth as tartan. Plaid or "tartan" kilts eventually evolved as Highland dress. Most tartarns seen today were in existence before the early 1800's. Today, Scots throughout the world recognize that the tartan and the kilt stand for Scotland. |
