Betta Classification
Usually when you asked someone about fighting fish, they will say :" Ah, it's only an ugly fish which like to fight! "
But in fact, they were wrong!
Betta Splendens, also known as Siamese fighting fish is believed to be originated from Thailand.
Originally, they are short fin in dark green colour.
Human has enhanced its tails shape and colour variety by selective breeding.
Basically, bettas are divided into 3 categories i.e. DISPLAYED BETTA, FIGHTER, and SHOW BETTA.
They
are those short tail and long veil tail fighting fish normally found in
fish shop.They are reared
in commercial way, feeding with heavy dry food so that they reach
maturity in 3 months time and sell to fish shop to make profit.Quality doesnt matter as long
as have quantity.
Fighter breeders need to choose good bloodline to breed. Normally, the fish with good
heart and won in the match convincingly will be chosen for
breeding. Good heart means
the fish is very aggressive and never want to give up fighting no matter
how badly injured. Female
is very important to produce good fighter because the male fighters
body shape will follow female. The way to rear fighter is very different from rearing Displayed Betta. Only live food will be given to
the fighter to maintain its sharp teeth and strength. Fighter will only ready for
fight when they are 6-8 months old. By that time, their mouth and body will be very tough and
hard.
Their offspring will not for sure carry its parent traits. So, the breeder need to test
the fish to find out whether its fighting technique is great ? mouth
sharp ? hard scale ? and etc. If the offspring is lousy, they will on its way to fish shop. If good, they will be fought in
arena.
They are developed by top plus expirence breeder to produce solid colour and good
finnage. Non-red is
desirous because regular Betta carries red pigment. So, getting rid of red pigment
is something to achieve in order to win in Betta competition. There
are variety types of Show Betta such as Crowntail, Delta, Double
tail, Halfmoon and etc. Halfmoon is the most difficult to
produce because the gene to produce Halfmoon is still unknown. Crowntail also has many types. For examples: SR (Single Ray), DR (Double Ray), DDR (Double Double Ray) and etc. The more ray the more expensive.
