Breeding Tips

Most of the people say breeding betta is very easy. But to me, it is very difficult due to I am just a beginner. I had tried many times to breed my bettas but it always failed. Until the fifth times, I had sucessfully breed my CT with about 40 fries.

How to sex a betta

Male Betta Splenden Female Betta Splenden

A male Betta Splenden will exhibit long finnage, such as pictured above. Their tails will vary in length depending on the type of tail they have, but they will nearly always be longer than females. Male are usually also larger in body length and overall size.

The female Betta Splenden will exhibit much shorter finnage than the male. The female will also exhibit a ovipositor, which is a small white spot on their belly side right behind and between their ventral fins. This is where the eggs are released during spawning.

Conditioning the pair

Betta is ready to breed when they are aroung 3-4 month old. Before you breed your betta, all you have to do is let the pair see each other for 1 week but I just let them see about 4 days. By this way, the female betta won't get injured and built more eggs. Your male betta must bigger than the female. If not, your male betta will be in horrible shape! Make sure that your female betta's abdomen is full of eggs. If not, the male betta will thought the female betta is a male betta and hurt her until dead!

Breeding tank setup

I use a 2ft tank and fill the tank with water until the water level reach 13cm. Make sure the water is dechlorined. Then cut a styrofoam cup into half and let it float on the water. You may put some water plants for example : Java Moss, Elodea or water hyacinth. Bid tank will allow the female betta to escape from male attack easily and the water will not become bad easily. Add some salt to prevent disease infection especialy velvet (no 1 fries killer)

Spawing

Day 1

Put the male betta inside the breeding tank. The female will beside him or inside the tank in another bottle. Most of the male betta will build a bubble nest overnight but some of them don't.

Day 2

Make sure the male betta already build his magnificient nest. If so, then only you release the female betta in. You will know when the female is ready by a couple signs.

Sign #1The female abdomen will getting larger.
Sign #2The female will get vertical stripes (only the dark colour betta)
Sign #3The "Head Down" dance. The female almost always exhibits the vertical stripes while doing this. She will wiggle, head down at him when he approaches.

If they do not courting, it is wise to put back the female in the bottle during at night because some of the female will revenge on male during night. Exmaple: Bared the male fins. This has even happen to me on my first betta spawning!

Day 3

If any thing OK, they will lay eggs on day 3. Remove the female immediately after she laid eggs. The male will carry on its duty to take care of the eggs. The eggs will hatch after 24/36 hours.

Day 5

You will see a lots of tails hanging on the nest.

Day 6

The fries learn how to swim. Not recommend to remove the male betta this time.

Day 7

The fries can swim very fast now. It's time to remove the male. Put in very little of infusoria or BBS. Feed them twice a day. Don't over feed them!
