strategies and tactics 2
RULE #1- Always buy an HE grenade before anything else. You'll find this incredibly useful later on in the round because after your teammates have weakened the other team, throwing an HE grenade will most likely kill a few opposing players then if you threw it at beginning of round. Secondly, you'll want to purchase either full armor or just kevlar vest. Going into battle without armor is more or less shooting yourself in the foot. Those are the two primary rules that you must follow at the beginning of the round. If not, you'll most likely end up dead or not fragging anyone. Now, if you don't have enough money to buy a submachine gun or your favorite rifle, go for a solid pistol with full ammo. A strong pistol is 100 times more efficient then an MP5 or AK-47 with 30 bullets. After you've done the following, you'll be able to do some virtual rampaging
These strategies are designed for 4 man teams NOTE - Some of these will seem common sense, but on more than one occasion, people have not done them. They are in no particular order. 1) Know thy team mates. If a person is covering an area and they go down, i means that there is an enemy coming that way. Send a person there to kill the enemy 2) Don't go it alone. There are 2 good reasons for this. the first is that if you come across an enemy by himself, he will be outnumbered, and you will be virtually garaunteed to survive the encounter. Second, if you encounter a group of enemies, you will need your partener's cover to fall back to a better position. 3) Leapfrog. This goes hand in hand with the not going alone part. If you and your team mate are manuvering down a hall with obstacles, or are coming around a corner, take it in chunks. The person in lead ducks behind an obstacle ahead, then the person in second runs past them (with the lead person covering them incase of surprise attack) and ducks behind the second obstacle. now the lead goes past the second, with the second covering them, and so on. if there are three or more people, the person in the very end is looking back to prevent surprise attacks. Around corners, the lead person looks around the corner (pops in and out) then if it is clear, he gives the go ahead, and they advance. if it is not clear, use the cover fire strat for corners. 4) Cover fire. This can be used in two ways. one as a diversion for the rest of the team to flank the enemy. two, as a way of buying time for a VIP (VIP means VIP in AS, Bomb carrier, or someone with a defuse kit) to get to safety. Here is a way of providing cover fire as a distraction to make the people distracting seem greater in number. Since this will usually be preformed at a choke point, you need at least two people. one pops up from around the corner, and fires four rounds at the enemy, not trying to kill (but hey! if you gett him great!). as soon as he returns from around the corner, the second person pops out and fires four rounds in the same manner. then they return behind cover, and the first person goes again. if you are in a corner of a hall, have the first person randomly fire a few shots in the general direction of the enemy. while they duck for cover the second person chucks a grenade bhind their cover. this does two things either they stay and get hit, or they leave their cover to be torn apart by the first person. 5) Choke points. Choke points are places in a map where the enemy has to go, or you have to pass through and there are no other ways. these are great places to set an ambush, so be wary when passing through them, and if you're defending, use them to your advantage. 6) Team work. While a single VERY good player may be able to let your team dominate, a well coordinated team will do twice as well. know who is covering what defense positions, and which attack paths they are taking. 7) Manners. many servers turn FF on, and you may accidentally injure or kill a teammate. if this happens, appologize. it lets them know it was a mistake, and your not just doing it to take their gun. otherwise you'll get TKed by them as revenge. 8) Communicate. If you spot an enemy, let your mates know where they are and or where they are heading. also, if you're on a sweep looking for the one remaining enemy. tell your mates where you are sweeping and what areas are clear. that way if you die, they know where the guy was hiding, and people don't sweep areas you've cleared. also, let peeps know when you are about to chuck a grenade that way they can get clear. 9) Stealth. this is one which is more or less optional, but many people stalk their enemies and go for a kill in the back a point blank range. turn the volume up so that you can hear foot steps, rolling grenades, and gunfights. This will tell you how close the enemy is without having to expose yourself Walk when you know an enemy is near. thye can't hear you, but you can hear their foot steps. this lets you hang by a corner that they are about to turn around, and you can open fire before they see you. Along with the sneaking around, if you see an enemy who is unaware of you at a considerable distance, don't take the sniper's shot. sneak up to them and go for the garaunteed kill. 10) Hide. If you are the last person on your team. do not be afraid to hide. wait until the enemy passes you by and then use stealth tactics to take them out from the rear. also, if you are sniping, choose a dark place where they can't really see you. gives you cover from people making quick checks. 11) Be Quick! if you are in a situation where speed is needed, be sure to to a quick 360 every once in a while while you are running to make sure no one is sneaking up on you. 12) Know they weapons. Use weapons that are appropiate for the firefight situations you find yourself in the most. if you find that you are always getting into pointblank range fights, use a shot gun as your main weapon for medium range fights, use semi-autos. the spread is just small enough so that if you aim at the body all the shots hit. in long range fights use rifles. the zoom in feature lets you stand a chance against snipers and lets you catch an unsuspecting camper with a devatating first hit. in extreme range fights, use the sniper rifles obviously. pistols are very accurate on the first shot. if you find yourself in a long range fight with a shot gun, take out the pistol and send a few shots (not holding down the fire button) to the sniper. if you hit him, he'll think twice before popping out of cover again. 13) be smart. if you are in a situation with a sniper and you are low on ammo, play the odds. there are very few snipers that can hit a randomly moving target. pop out of cover and duck back. the sniper will usually take a shot. do this to force them to run outta ammo. this make take a while, but use it as a last resort. if you know an enemy is heading towards you, see if there is a way to take a corridor to get behind him. that way, you have the drop on him AND he has to turn around before he can hit you. In the defusion maps, if you are a CT and the bomb is going to go off, don't try to defuse it. wait it out. it'll be better usually to let them get the win and you keep your expensive equipment than to let them win and you die. 14) Head shots! head shots will kill quicker than body hits. know where to aim with each weapon so that the recoil will force the bullets up into the head. 15) gang up. if there are two of you and one of the enemy, get the enemy from both sides. they have to choose who shoot at, and while they are shooting at one, the other will kill him
Aiming and Proper Shooting Technique This section is by far the most important factor in your Counter-Strike playing career. If your shooting and aiming techniques are poor, the other players will always have an advantage over you. Here are the proper techniques of shooting/aiming- 1) Try to aim above the CT's/T's belt. If you shoot a player above the belt, it will cause more damage then in the leg for example. After you've worked on just hitting the players above the belt, try aiming for the head. With any gun, 2-6 head shots will either kill them or severely injure them 2) Pulse your fire button correctly. Regardless what gun you purchase, your going to want to pulse your fire button. When I say pulse I mean fire bursts of bullets (usually 2-4 bullets a burst). This will increase your aim to another level. Now, if you have a highly inaccurate gun (AK-47 for example), your going to want to shoot off bursts of bullets as much as possible. If you can master the art of shotting bursts of bullets from the AK, you soon become a great Counter-Strike player. This rule goes for any other gun but I highly stress it with the AK-47. 3) Jump and strafe whenever possible. When you're in battle, it is much more difficult to hit a target that is moving and jumping around then it is to hit a stationary one. Also, by jumping, it forces your crosshair to hit the upper part of the opposing team's bodies. Hence, increasing the chances of getting head shots and upper body shots. This technique is for advanced players, but soon enough, you'll be able to do this yourself. So don't try this when you first start out. Lastly, proper sniping technique. Regardless what rifle you're using, try to crouch and shoot when possible. Crouching will increase your aim and prevent you from moving easily. Second rule of sniping is if your ping is 10-110, try to lead the shot the most minute bit in front of the players movement. Now, if you have 120-150 ping, you'll want to increase the amount of length between your shot and the players movement. If you have 160-200+ ping, it becomes very difficult to snipe and most likely your better off not sniping at all. Some people can pull it off, some can't. It's obvious that the AWP is by far the more powerful rifle in the game, but, is it the most sufficient? Not at all. The scout, a gun that is less played then the AWP, is a great gun. If you think about it, once you shoot a player with the scout, it stops them from moving them temporarily which leaves you to easily shoot him again. By shooting him twice with a scout, you'll probably kill him or at least hurt him badly. The rule of trying to hit above the belt also goes for sniping guns (except for the AWP, guaranteed kill regardless where shot). Some of you newbies out there are going to shoot a guy through a wall with an AWP and not kill him. I know, you'll probably be saying, "WTF?! I shot that f00 with AWP, he should have been fragged :D!" Wrong, depending on the thickness of the wall, the bullet will not penetrate at full speed, hence, not hitting the opposing player will full force. My recommendation, don't try sniping until you get good with all other guns.
Charging or Camping If you chose to charge after you've bought your equipment, it is absolutely vital to stick with your team. If you do the equation, you and 3-4 other teammates can easily take down 2-3 opposing teammates then you charging out like Rambo, getting mowed down by some blaster, then getting made fun of. Another positive aspect of charging with several teammates is that if there's a sniper at the point where your charging, and he has to choose to snipe one of you, your chances increase dramatically of getting sniped. Also, the sniper will emotionally shutdown and begin to cry if he sees a group of opposing teammates charging at him. Now, if you feel the need to ditch your teammates and go commando style, do it with passion and remember this phrase "Chicks dig scars, pain is temporary, glory is forever". When you embark on your Kamikaze mission, make sure that when you get fragged gloriously, you'll feel you've accomplished something for yourself, maybe not for your teammates, but for you. You'll find a sense of inner pride when you do this. Camping- not respected by any Counter-Strike rusher, but, is necessary at times. When you've decided to camp instead of charge, MAKE SURE TO CAMP WITH SEVERAL OTHER TEAMMATES. I can not stress this more. It will be humorous to watch you get fragged by four other opposing teammates without giving a fight. Second rule of camping is to not be easily visible. If you make your self visible from a reasonable distance, the opposing team is going to take big time advantage of you, it's a given. On demolition maps (i.e. de_dust , de_prodigy), if you camp as a terrorist, you'll find that winning will be significantly more difficult then if you rushed with your fellow terrorists. On hostage rescue maps (i.e. cs_siege Cs_estate), you'll want to either 1) Take cover near hostages (CT's will try not to shoot the hostages, but shoot you directly which will make them in turn most likely to miss you) or 2) Get proper coverage behind a tree, box, or any kind of object between you and the CT's. Make sure that the object gives enough space for you to fire at the CT's and take cover when needed.
Dodging Dodging enemy fire is a vital part in staying alive. If you stay still unprotected in a high-tension CS gameeven for a second, your death is assured. When in combat, keep on the move! When the mouse was first used for aiming etc in FPS games ("mouse-look"), the keys that were originally used for turning needed a new purpose. We ended up sidestepping. Sidestepping, or strafing, is a fundamental part of dodging. Sidestepping allows many techniques to increase your chances of staying aliveducking from in and out of cover quickly and circling to name a couple. While using your 'trusty' sidestepping techniques, it is often useful to duck or jump. This extra movement, combined with sidestepping/running, can be just enough to throw the opposition off getting a crucial hit. If you keep in mind the importance of movement and its key areasbalance, aiming and dodgingyou can effectively increase your success-rate not only in CS, but all FPS titles. Try to develop your own dodging and anticipation techniques to maximize your performance.
Counter-Strike tries to imitate the real world in many ways to create the impression of realism. This 'illusion' of realism ranges from the style of levels to the real-life weapons to the health settings. A sometimes ignored but very important feature included in CS is recoil. For those who don't know, recoil is the jolting of a weapon after it has been fired. This causes the weapon to fire inaccurately as the holder of the firearm can't hold it steady. Counter-terrorism teams around the world use tactics to counter thisusually a variation on a 'double-tap.' This is basically firing two rounds at a target at a time. When used correctly this improves accuracy markedly, saving ammo and improving kill-ratio. Where does CS come in? As you continue to fire, your targeting reticule gets slightly larger. This is showing that the bullets you are firing are becoming more inaccurate. Although this difference in accuracy may seem negligible, when it comes to a high-tempo online game, this inaccuracy is the difference between a headshot and a clean-miss. This recoil-inaccuracy is further increased by other factors such as if the player is running. So it makes me wonder why I see so many in CS run at me with an AK only to fire thirty rounds at me while I sit and watch their bullets completely miss. The solution to this is very simple and, in principle, it is very similar to the real world 'double-tap.' Try never to fire more than 2-5 rounds at a time, as this will keep recoil to a minimum. Keep in mind that recoil affects each weapon slightly differently. While recoil may have little effect at close range with an MP5, recoil control is integral to being able to use weapons like the AK at any range beyond a few meters. Ducking while firing short bursts of a couple of rounds can turn recoil hampered weapons like the Para and AK into precision instruments. In most situations, there are some basic courses of action to choose from to reduce recoil's effects during a firefighteach should be used in the appropriate situation. Firstly, stop running! When you have a clean shot at an opponent at medium-long range, STOP! This applies to almost every weaponSMGs to sniper rifles. Unless your aim is to frighten your opponent into psychological submission by firing bullets in their general direction, running while trying to hit a target at a distance is a waste of ammo. Obviously there are exceptions to this casee.g. remaining stationary in front of an AWP'er won't get you the Nobel Prize in tactics. Secondly, your opponent's head should always be your primary target. However, to hit this target when taking recoil into account, you sometimes must aim a little lower (torso-neck depending on distance) so when recoil sends your aim flying upward, your bullets will actually get closer to the target. This may seem obvious but the number of players who insist on pummeling the air above their enemy's head must be missing something. Of course, recoil in CS is only a simulated experience. No matter how still you crouched, in real life you could never hit a target with any degree of precision with a Para at long range. Neither would bullets fly randomly within a certain area in the manner that they do in CS (remember those random AK headshots?). Still, in CS, recoil not only wreaks havoc on your aim but sometimes (too often) gives you a headshot even when you aren't aiming for the head. These lucky shots are more chance than skill and often are accompanied by accusations of cheating. Just be prepared to take what you get. Once you have mastered recoil, weapons in CS are totally transformedthe seemingly useless AK will turn into a deadly strike weapon. By keeping in mind the effects of recoil and movement, you should be able to build up accuracy and increase those crucial headshots.
It's a sad fact that most people don't use the radar either because they're too preoccupied with running around, or they don't understand it! While alive look up in your upper left hand corner, you should see a mini radar screen. If you don't, type drawradar in the console (~ key). Remember, you can only see your own team with the radar. This is the radar! Notice the 'T's? That means that this teammate is above you!See the upside down T? That means they're below you!Special symbols: -Flashing Yellow - This person has just used the radio. -Red - This person is a VIP, or they have C4, depending on the mission. Protect them at all costs.
The word is uttered with disdain and contempt, but "camping" is, when used properly, a legitimate and effective strategy. According to those who crucify me for doing it, "camping" is the practice of either a) holing up in an easily-defended, rather obscure location and getting the jump on the enemy by popping them out of nowhere or b) moving quietly across the map, hearing an approaching enemy, hiding, and then ambushing him. There is nothing inherently wrong with either. Remember that, unlike death match games such as Quake, Counterstrike is a team-based game played within an attack-and-defend scenario or variation thereof. In the "hostage rescue" scenarios, for example, the Terrorists are on the defensive, attempting to hold off the attacking Counter-Terrorists. Likewise, in the "defusion" maps, the CTs defend their turf from the bomb-toting Ts. In either case, one side is occupying an area with the intention of keeping the other side out. Concealing yourself in a static position that offers you good visibility as well as the element of surprise is a sensible way to defend. Real combatants call this "digging in." Frustrated CS players call it "camping." Granted, an attacker who "digs in" accomplishes almost nothing. Counter-terrorists who camp in a "hostage rescue" map, for example, are nothing more than counter-productive unless the Terrorists venture outside in search of their enemy. (This isnt likely to happen, though, since as of B6 the Ts will win the match if they still have their hostages when the time runs out; they may as well wait it out inside until the entire team can afford heavy weapons.) But a defender who controls access to his enemys objective is simply doing his job. A Case in Point: When youre the last Terrorist left in Canyon Siege because all of your teammates have dispersed individually across the map (and been taken out one-by-one by a cohesive CT team), youd be amazed at how many attackers you can waste by hiding out in the vent room. Position yourself in the corner by the door, facing the vent. Listen for someone climbing up to the vent opening. When a CT crawls through the opening, the first body part you see is his head an instant kill. Also, listen for attackers approaching the door and either fire through the door or whack em as soon as they slide it open. When all is said and done, you have single-handedly held off the CTs, kept your hostages, and won the match. (Conversely, CTs should toss several grenades through the vent before entering in order to clear nasty buggers like me out of that room. Dont expect the hostages to survive, though.) As I mentioned earlier, the other form of "camping" involves moving stealthily across the map towards your objective and taking every opportunity to ambush enemy players along the way. It is amazing that as effective as sneaking is (holding SHIFT while moving), almost no one does it. Ive made many kills by sneaking. In the Militia map, for example, Ive racked up several kills by sneaking through the sewer; when I hear an enemy running from the other direction, I move up to the corner around which he is about to appear and wait; more often than not, I am able to take him totally by surprise, kill him, and continue towards the enemy base. What also works is sneaking up to the corner and then around it; most players expect me to be running and so are unprepared when I appear and cap 'em. Despite it's effectiveness (or perhaps because of it) I am constantly berated for "camping" as soon as I start racking up the kills. Anti-campers whine that capping someone while camping is "cheap." Maybe, maybe not. All I can say is that a "cheap" kill is still a kill, regardless. I play CS within the limits set out by the game designers. Which means that I dont use head-shot scripts or cheat in any other conceivable way. Until those very same game designers implement some kind of "idle timeout" script to kill players who remain stationary for too long, I will continue to "camp." Because it is a legitimate, effective strategy that works.
Friends and fellow gamers, lend me your ears for I'm here not to praise the snipers but to bury them! Although I dislike sniping, I can snipe... not like people who only take 1 role. Learning to take multiple roles can wreak havoc on the battlefield and your opponent will keep guessing what you're up to next. This guide won't be narrow minded but will look at both side of the picture... Both the anti sniper and the sniper. We all know what a sniper does so lets skip to what the anti sniper can do shall we? There are 3 ways literally to kill a sniper and it's quite simple actually. 1st, rush and attack at him and take him out with a light weapon. 2nd, Go around the map and backstab the little prick. 3rd, Counter snipe with an AWP back at him. Light weapon refers to handguns, shotguns and the sub machine guns category. Rush and Attack is by far the simplest tactic and often the most suicidal. Bet your friends are going to watch you and the sniper slug it out if you ever make it. To implement this tactic, you need to learn how to strafe left and right in the area where the sniper can shoot you. Zigzag left and right like a drunkard while still facing your target and hope that sniper rifle isn't a G3/SG1! This tactic is often good against 1 or 2 snipers. If you know you are going to do this, grab a smoke grenade and a HE just in case. Chuck the Smoke and you can get a team through sniper ally and greet him with lots of heavy gunfire. For the sniper's case, if the clown is getting close and you are using an AWP, switch to handgun for goodness sake. You'll have a much better chance than that 1 shot you are trying so hard to aim for. And if more are coming, retreat to the rest of your team. Backstabbing is my favorite hobby. This requires little skill other than knowing the map and keep an eye open for any guards. This tactic is simple and straightforward. Go into the map and sneak around. You might need to follow a rush team then split up afterwards. When you get to your target, check if he notices or not. If not, kill him anyway you like. Preferably many like to use the knife so to shame the player which is funny. If he notices you, KILL that fool! Silenced weapons here are a plus because you can circle strafe him while he don't know where he's being hit. Snipers in this case should also pull out that handgun and retreat. Oh, this tactic can kill a group of snipers unlike the above. Counter Snipe is by far the hardest tactic to do. Why, the guy is already in position waiting for anybody challenging his distance supremacy. What this tactic is get into position quick and snipe him before he snipe you. This is very hard and only works if the sniper is looking elsewhere then where you will pop out and greet him. It also takes out only 1 sniper and if there are multiple snipers, your out of luck. Unfortunately, this is the only tactic a guy with a sniper rifle can do. If you think this won't work, stick with the rush team and try some backstabbing with your handgun or the rifle at a distance. Sniper should watch the camper while every now and then check his back.
