Mariah slams J.Lo December 31st Mariah Carey has slammed fellow chart-star Jennifer Lopez - for not having "God-given talent". The singer is dismissive of the Latino lovely for being an actress-turned singer, rather than a person who has dedicated their entire life to singing. Mariah, who starred in the massive film flop Glitter, says of Lopez, "She's an actress, you know, while I've been doing this my whole life. Singing is first and foremost a God-given talent. Mariah Holds, Whitney Skids December 31st Whitney Houston's album Just Whitney is in the red zone, on life support and in a free fall. According to Billboard and SoundScan, holiday sales of the new album are so bad that it fell this week to No. 30 after debuting on Billboard the previous week at No. 9. It doesn't help that Arista Records has been frustrated with radio, which doesn't want to play any of the tracks from Just Whitney. Mariah Carey is having the same problem with not getting her songs on the air. This is also a bit strange, since Carey has four or five potential singles on Charmbracelet, her latest offering. The main difference between Carey and Houston is that the former is at least selling records — about 130,000 a week, which isn't bad right now. 106 & PARK SUMMERY December 26th Mariah appeared on BET's 106 & Park last night & here is a summer from IronysChild & Robbie80 @ FOMM: "She had a little contest for people to guess the number of candy canes in a glass, and the girl won a charmbracelet. It was cool as she seemed to be a real fan as she said her fave song off CB is "BOTH" Anyway, at one point they let an audience member ask a question. A guy asked something about her range and whether she was born with it or had to work on it. She then went on a tangent about how she doesn't know what her range is as she isn't good with technical things, and someone will tell her she is singing a "G over flat of something" (not the exact quote but you get the idea ) and she won't really know what they mean. The rest was just randomness between her and the hosts...talking about paparazzi, Christmas and being festive, etc. Mariah gave Free a little red Louis Vitton bag and then she gave A.J. a louis vitton Cell Phone Holder. A.J gave Free and Mariah some very expensive watches & he also gave them both designer boots. Mariah was on pretty much the whole hour and a half but each segment was only 1-2 minutes long...she was just on between videos. They played the video for the remix of "AIWFCIY" early on and then played the regular video for it near the end. Mariah and AJ denied the rumor of them being together and apparently Mariah went to his New Year's party last year (it was on a boat, it seems). They talked about the paparazzi coming out, but I never saw pics of that Anyway, Mariah said she didn't know what kind of car AJ drove, and he didn't know what the charms on her bracelet meant. MUSIC INDUSTRY OUT OF TUNE December 24th Despite efforts by record executives to stanch declining CD sales by releasing a cavalcade of big-name artists during the critical Christmas shopping season, early sales figures show an already struggling industry may now be in even worse shape. In the five weeks since mid-November, when the record labels began their biggest holiday blitz in recent memory, compact disc sales were down 12.9 percent compared to the period last year, according to data from Nielsen SoundScan, which tracks music sales. That poor performance comes even as new CDs from artists like Shania Twain, Mariah Carey, Jay-Z and Paul McCartney have sold well, and has pushed overall sales for the year down further. Through the week ended Dec. 15, the record industry is off 10.8 percent, compared to a year earlier. It's no coincidence that the first single from the new CD is called "Through the Rain." She's used her personal experiences in writing her songs.
