"Manas
since its birth is trying to organise the families
of the mentally ills for a joint endeavour to
emerge as a self-sustaining group. Of course,
these overstressed families cannot exclusively
on their own grow as a self-help group unless
vigorously and consistently supported by other
members of the society at large and mental health
professionals in particular. Manas is thus a dynamic
endeavour in which - the families of mental patients,
ex-patients, their friends and social service
oriented people from almost all walks of life,
the honest professionals in the mental health
field have joined hands to provide the requisite"milieu"
for a richer, saner and more healthy lives for
all -not only for the stigmatised mental patients
and their families." (Quote from the book
'Ghareo Nahe Paareo Nahe' -by Amal Som) |
As
a step towards fufilment of our dream a land measuring
about 2 acre was purchased at Madanpur in Nadia
district and a building was constructed from the
fund collected as donation from friends and wellwishers.
Since the building was envisaged as a short stay
home we named it as "Khanika". Here,
the families with mentally distressed members
as well as our friends and donors may stay in
an ASHRAM-like spirit. |

Out
of concern for the helpless mental patients, their
families, persons from various walks of life,
namely, teachers, students, physicians, journalists,
social workers, people science activist, human
right activist and many other like-minded people
joined in the initiative. The common ground for
initiating this program was that either they themselves
have suffered from some form of mental distress
in certain phase of their life, or have seen or
known someone suffering from such diseases. A
Society initially named as 'SRIJONI' was formed
on 21.11.1981 and was later formally registered
in the name of 'MANAS' under Societies Reg. Act.
