| Hello and welcome, my name is Joseph Newman and founder of the Manahoac Saponi Mattamuskeet Nation. I descend from the Collins' of Virginia, Granville county, NC, and Hyde county, NC (Cati Collins' Daughter or Sister) as well as several NC families who have possible descendancy with the Lost Colony. I figured it was time we bring back our Manahaoc, Saponi, and Mattamuskeet names and culture. At one time our Saponi ancestors owned nearly 1/3rd of Virginia while our Carolina coastal Algonkians owned a large chunk of the Carolina coastal areas. The Manahoac Saponi Mattamuskeet Nation enrollment is open to all Manahoac, Saponi, and Mattamuskeet descendants (Including all nc Algonkian tribes). Originally we started out as just the Manahoac Saponi Nation but after much research we found that many if not all of the Saponi which stayed in the VA and NC area appreantly was descendants of also the Carolina coastal Algonkians which would account for the Algonkian and Siouan words being recorded for the Saponi, so we added the Mattamuskeet name as well, the Mattamuskeet was a reservation in Hyde county, NC and was comprised of nearly all Carolina Algonkians. We started around August of 2008 so our tribal members are still small but we are seeking out as many descendants as possible since we feel ALL descendants no matter where they have moved to or how non Native marriages over the many years may have lightened or darkened the skin tone should still have a right to reclaim their Native heritage.
