academics
I never dreamed of becoming an academic.... i bummed out in college when i was at the pontifical and royal university. Too much of B_S... ( its not what you think...B_S is "Bilib sa Sarili" or Superman complex)..in plain language I didnt have enough focus and discipline to parlay the temptations of the new found freedom a university student enjoy. Predictably I also realized the NEWTONIAN law applies in my context. For every action theres an equal and oppositely directed reaction.
Or was I a victim of the KARMIC LAW of RETRIBUTION, What you sow, you reap!
In pleading my case, I was prepared intellectually but the lure of going to many new places and having drinking binges with my college buddies ( puruntong, ka louie, samot, nyaks, oiprac, ka roque ...) was by far better than attending classes.
I was WRONG!!!
I found better things to do ( or so i thought). Getting work and earning for my keep was fun at the start but after a few years you tend to yearn to finish unfinished business. I went back to school. And lo and behold.... I was GOOD!!!...no I was GREAT!!!
And I was invited as a college instructor.... the rest is history...er.. the start of a new journey....
expertise
In any type of profession, in my case vocation, it really pays for you to be good at least in one or two areas ( makes sense eh!) In teaching particularly, identifying a field of expertise and be really good at it is very beneficial to the academic health not only of the teachers but also of the institution. Excellence and a good reputation are magnets to success.
But you cannot simply wake up in the morning and say i will be an expert in this... and this... It took me a while to realize that my inclination is in the APPLIED side of mathematics. Applied in a sense that mathematical concepts are used in real world context. Particularly in DECISION SCIENCE.
Why Decision Science? Or what is Decision Science? Decision are always made under conditions of uncertainty and mathematics provide sustitutes to uncertainty ( probability) if you know these techniques, you have perfect information! What do you have afterwards?.... An informed type of decision. That excites me!!! ( nerdy... nerdy.. tsk, tsk)
Fields under Decision Science
- Operations Research
- Statistics and Probability
- Numerical Analysis
