Project Narrative

Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Geographically speaking, the SM Mall of Asia, which stands within the reclamation area, was constructed at the west of Roxas Boulevard and south of Epifanio de los Santos or EDSA in Pasay City. Pasay City, which is also known as the Bay City, is among the fourteen cities in Metro Manila. It is bordered on the north by the nation’s capital, Manila, to the northeast by Makati City, to the east by Taguig City, and Parañaque City to the south. A certain part of the Manila Bay was landfilled that’s why it is called a reclamation area. Some establishments that are standing on the reclamation areas are: CCP Complex, Star City, Westin Philippine Plaza and many more.

The mall has a huge bronze globe almost the same as the Universal studios, which is located at the very entrance of the mall compound. The mall consists of four buildings that are interconnected by bridges, the Main Mall, North and South Wings and the Entertainment Mall which houses the cinemas, IMAX cinema, the scenery of the Manila Bay, etc.

The Mall of Asia is owned and managed by the SM Prime Holdings. The SM Prime Holdings is under the management of a Chinese-Filipino tycoon, Mr. Henry Sy. SM Prime Holdings has over 25 malls in the Philippines and a dozen to open within the year of 2007. The SM Prime Holdings also has two branches and one to pen in China.

The SM Mall of Asia is known and best for shopping, food, a place for work, non-stop fun, entertainment and most especially for the Filipinos to have a smile that their country has a mall like the SM Mall of Asia.

2. Summary of Our Project

So, basically, at the end of the day, our project’s main goal and objective is to inform each and every individual who will read it about the world’s 3rd largest Mall. Why, in the very first place? It is because we wanted to uphold Philippine Tourism and Economy.

As we see in status quo, our Economy is somewhat and somehow, slowing down in progress and is fast decelerating in terms of investments and dollars. That’s why we planned on doing this particular project, for the world to see what Philippines has in store for them.

That’s why at the end of the day, it doesn’t get any better than this…

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home: 90%
B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom: 45 workstations
C. Connection speed used in the classroom: DSL Connection
D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet: 3-4 years

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Scarcity of time will be the main difficulty that the researchers might have to face through. That’s why students must always observe time supervision, cooperation, dedication and determination during the actual performance.

Because of hectic schedules and frantic appointments in our academic endeavors, we cannot immediately accomplish and improve our project write-ups. Providentially, our English educator, Mr. Patrick Cordero gave 2 days of his period, in order for us to work with our narratives and research work. It will be extremely difficult for the students in view of the fact that we must be able to gather authentic data that would merely support our assigned topic. Furthermore, the establishment and the enhancement of the project website will also be very challenging in our part, since we only have limited knowledge in HTML. Fortunately, our computer teacher, Mr. Roxan Cosico offered a helping hand for the technical complexities of the students. He had also given some of his periods for the researchers to continue to accomplish their narratives. Aside from that, he also coordinated with our English and Filipino teachers so as to make the necessary corrections and to alleviate problems that might arise with the researchers’ sentence structure. Without their support and unchanging assistance, this project wouldn’t be possible at all.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Basically, once and for all, why Mall of Asia? Simple. It’s the fact that this certain Mall is an addition to Philippine Tourism, which, as we see in status quo, is not really in progress. That’s why the aim of this project of ours is to give more importance to the Philippines per se, that it may be fruitful in whatever it does. That’s why we chose Mall of Asia, because it is still a new built establishment and that we believe it would really help and may have a big impact and a sustainable Philippine Tourism and Economy. Since it is the 3rd biggest mall in the world, we must use this notion to be able to uphold what would make the Philippines better in the long run.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

This Project is basically split into 3 subjects in our school, namely: Filipino, English and Computer. It fitted the requirements because our objective is that we will make a website in Filipino and English Languages respectively. Also, another thing that it wanted to stress is for us to enhance our unique abilities towards the Internet. We learned HTML (Hypertext Transfer Protocol), Flash and also, Adobe Photoshop. We have learned to correct our own mistakes regarding our works with the help of our teachers per se. Our technical difficulties basically revolved on HTML, that we, on our part, has just a little ounce of knowledge towards it. The group concepts that we practiced is that we did split each chore regarding this project. Some of us would answer the questions while others would think about concepts of our Webpage. Our main tool and key for this project is simply COMMUNICATION. We told each other to be sensitive to whatever one needs for his work. Truly, it was an experience of fun and fulfillment.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you use to complete your CyberFair project?

The group used various softwares like Microsoft Office programs, Adobe Photoshop 7.01. We used Yahoo Geocities for creating the website and other programs available in our computer.

Programs and websites that deal with website making or editing that we used are for free. We also used certain internet programs for sharing thoughts and insights about the topic like e-mail, instant messaging and on-line chat like Yahoo/Windows Messenger and Yahoo Mail.

We also used different kinds of magazines for reactions and complete detail for the project like Mr. and Ms. Magazine, Star Studio Magazine, Biz News Asia Magazine, newspapers like Phil. Daily Inquirer and Phil. Star.

The big help of computers lead us to this project. We used different gadgets like digital camera that we borrowed from our parents and phone’s camera. We used more of the digital camera because of the availability of time spent together with our group mates. We keep on photographing the Mall of Asia to share to the people the beauty of the mall and its community around. This project is for the enjoyment and pleasure of a family. We are not into the kids or teenagers like us to be in the mall and spend time there than studying.

For the complete list of the information tools and technologies we used in this project link to our bibliography.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

One person who was the first one we talked to was our English Teacher Mr. Patrick Ian Cordero who gave us best suggestions that best suit up the category we have. He suggested that we choose on places that are really visible to go to by ordinary people and at the same time an aspect in Philippine Tourism that promotes the well-being of Filipinos per se. That’s why at the end of the day, we on the group agreed on tackling about the SM Mall of Asia at Diosdado Macapagal Ave. at Pasay City. He, himself, Mr. Cordero, believed on the outcome of our Project. We would always hear praises from him stating that our Project will work out fine and giving us comments on how to improve more our project each and everyday.

We as a group think that without Mr. Cordero’s help and suggestions pertaining this project, we may be found helpless and just cramming ourselves up and complying just for the sake of deadline. That’s why we are so much thankful to him that he helped us to work this project out.

So, what happened is, we all together went as a group at the SM Mall of Asia. We went there for some interviews with the personnel, maintenance people, security guards and the shoppers, themselves. We first asked them on how they described the Mall of Asia the first time they set their feet upon it. All agreed to one perspective: that it is HUGE, MASSIVE, SPACIOUS, RELAXING and most especially, a GOOD SCENERY for PHILIPPINE TOURISM. We next asked them on what are the peak days of the Mall. All the guards we have interviewed agreed that it is during Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays that people get the chance to wander themselves in this gigantic place. Next thing we asked was the amount that they earn in a single day. (this goes for the salesladies) They said that so far, the biggest outcome of their sale was P1,000,000 in certain day! Imagine how much money Mr. Henry Sy would earn in a span of a month! Moving on, we questioned the supervisors of certain stalls on what is the most exciting part of being in the Mall. One said that it is because of the celebrities that come there each and every day. Another one said that it is the free watch of concerts and shows. (i.e. SOP) Lastly, we asked a group of shoppers themselves on how they will compare the SM Mall of Asia to the other predecessors of SM like SM North EDSA and SM Megamall. One said that it is much colder in the said Mall unlike its predecessors. The other butted in and said that the Mall has a huge advantage over all the other Malls given that it is the 3rd largest Mall in the world and that it is much more spacious and you’re free to move because of its massive grounds unlike its predecessors, you’re like ants that clobber up a food if there’s a certain SALE.

As time passes by, with the interviews we had and the information we gathered in our researches, our group is already coming up with new ideas such as making it a grandeur one, with effects and designs completing the project per se.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

This project is intended to strengthen the capabilities of the students in gathering data on a specific category, so as to achieve concrete ideas and knowledgeable facts about the particular subject they want to present. Hence, this project, with the use of the Internet, basically aims to establish relationships and groups with various individuals within their local community.

Last August 25, our teacher in Computer Education, Mr. Roxan Cosico had formally introduced the first Cyberfair competition in our school. He, with our English teacher gave an introduction on what such competition was all about. He had also let the researchers looked over on some projects within the net, in order to be familiar on what would be their ventures, tasks and undertakings throughout the project. We had also done some group meetings in our English and Computer class in preparation for the division of tasks of each researcher. With the help of our school educators, these preparations will lead us to determine our vulnerabilities and by which, had also brought strength in our part as we learned some formats and techniques on how to create distinctive and exceptional website.

Actually, the researchers should not only focus in achieving higher grades in this project. For us, what is more significant is how we provide important and necessary data that would surely persuade mostly the consumers who will view our website. As it typically says, "the customers are always right."

Indeed, our project will establish extreme impact to our clients, by means of presenting needed information.

Definitely, our project made a difference, especially the fact that it focuses more on what the Philippine’s true colors are. What is so unique with our presentation is that we had designs and more blazing effects than others to be able to uphold more sustainable viewing. Also, moving on, our Project will certainly spread out new things and information regarding what Philippines have in store for the society per se. Meaning, our Project depicts that notion on Philippine Tourism and Economy.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We can say that this project would have not been possible without our Almighty God. We would like to thank Him for all His enlightenment and for leading our group to the right path to be able to finish this project. We would like to thank Mr. Jemome Paul Garcia-Ariño for sharing his knowledge in his workplace to us.

We can humbly say that our knowledge within us was of great help to finish this project. But where did we get this knowledge? This is the time when we thank our mentors. We would like to thank Mr. Roxan Cosico for introducing us the CyberFair competition, for teaching us the basics to be able to make our website much better, for his sharing his experiences regarding this competition and for his keen that our school will be winning not only for local level but of international too. We would like to thank Mr. Patrick Cordero, 2nd year English teacher, for informing us regarding the different categories of the competition, for his undying support for us and of course, for correcting our grammar in the English translation. Lastly, we would like to thank Ms. Roselyn Abancia, 2nd year Filipino teacher, a responsible student council adviser and our section adviser, for her time to check our grammar in the Filipino translation. Again, thanks to all of you!!!

To end this up, we would like to thank the editors or authors of the resources that we have used for more information and facts regarding the SM Mall of Asia.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

At the end of the day, we discovered that making a webpage is really that hard. But, to think of the many people that may be benefited with our project, it perseveres us to pursue this project more.

Also, the main lesson that we got from this project is the whole notion about teamwork, that we can’t do everything on our own. We also learned the value of time, on how much it would be detrimental on our side if we would just slack this project off and cram it all up in the later time. But, as a whole, the experience was fun, exciting and unforgettable.
