Boogie Summer
Boogie Summer is based on my own youth - that magical summer before high school graduation, before I had to get a job, and before I got rid of my pesky virginity. We had our own Board Beach, although it wasn't called that - it was Boogie Beach. But, we ended up referring to that summer as our Board Summer. My best friend, Squeak, my trusty 1977 Cadillac Eldorado, and my awesome boogie board were all I needed for the best summer of my life.
Those last few days of school it was all I could do to focus on my finals. I was in love - Becky Chrismitchel was the most bodacious babe in all of Calvin Coolidge High, and I just knew I had to make her mine. The only things standing in my way were her Neanderthal rich-kid boyfriend, Bret Besterson, and Principal Cardaway, the perpetual thorn in my side. I don't know what I did to tick him off so much; I think he had it in for me because my dad always beat him at the weekly Go Fish games. Those were pretty high-stakes games, and although the old man wouldn't admit it, I'm pretty sure the Principal was into him for a couple of big ones. (Back then big ones were 100's, not like today. - ed) There was nothing I could do to get him off my back. If I was cutting class, there he was. If I was passing notes about boogie boarding to Squeak, there he was. Or if I was try to talk to Becky. there he was. ESPECIALLY if I was trying to talk to Becky.
When school finally let out, I just knew my first stop that summer would be the beach, where my friend Chaz was. Chaz was an eccentric old boogie board rental guy who also ran the fruit shake stand. He'd been heavily involved in the late '70's boogie scene in the area, but for reasons unbenkownst to us, he'd left all that behind and was content to rent boogie boards to tourists and dispense wisdom to the locals. That wisdom came pretty handy that summer, because it was mainly due to Chaz's inspirations that I trained for, entered, and won the big boogie contest that summer. Winning that contest made all the difference in my life - then and today. Before I won that contest I was a wild young boogie dreamer who only hoped to win the most beautiful girl in the school. Winning that contest showed me what's truly inside of me, and made me the man I am today.
Anyway, that's the story behind Boogie Summer '87. You'll have to watch the movie for the details, but suffice to say, it's pretty accurate. And I think I learned more in that summer than in any summer since. Except for maybe the summer I was working undercover vice on Clearwater Beach and busted a ring of international pet-nappers. But that's a whole 'nother story, isn't it?
