I knew it would be good.

All summer, people would be anticipating other alleged, and substandard blockbusters (see Final Fantasy and Planet of the Apes), but I would always say, "August 3rd! Rush Hour 2!" Now, I am vindicated.

The sequel to the hit 1998 buddy action comedy takes off where the last one ended. Hong Kong Inspector Lee (Chan) and L.A. cop James Carter (Tucker) go off on vacation to Hong Kong, as the previous movie suggested. There, they unwittingly, and unwillingly, stumble into a counterfeit money scam, involving Lee's father's old partner (John Lone) and his henchwoman (Crouching Tiger's Zhang Ziyi, who says a total of three words in English, as if that really matters). The investigation takes them briefly to L.A., then to Las Vegas, where the movie concludes. Yup, that's pretty much it!

Being a Jackie Chan film, many cool fight scenes ensue. At age 47, it's amazing the see Chan still able to do all sorts of crazy stunts. It's also good to see Tucker get in on some of them. Speaking of Chris Tucker, his presence means that some hilarity is had by all. He talks and talks and talk, and it's all so funny. The funniest parts are the ones they didn't use. Stick around for the outtakes at the end, and you'll know what I'm talking about.

Don't allow the simplicity of the plot to deceive you. This is a great movie. Sure, it's the same Lethal Weapon-esque formula, but it's just so good to see Chan and Tucker working on the screen. I actually believe that they are good friends. And there is something about simply seeing Chan that brings a smile to my face. He seems so nice and friendly and genuine.

After a slew of disappointing movies, it's such a relief to see that one of them actually lived up to my expectations. If the movie's conclusion means anything, we're going to see RH3, set in New York. I estimate, oh, say, summer 2003, maybe. Yeah, that sounds good. I can hardly wait.
