| Okay, this has been on my mind lately and I must discuss it (if only with myself, please feel free to comment in the guestbook after you read this). So, random, relatively attractive 19 or 20 year old who works with my ex-boyfriend finds me attractive. No, wait. Thinks I'm "HOT." (No, this isn't going to be a self-centered rant, just a musing, just let me get to that you impatient bastards.) Discovering this fact has caused me to think quite a bit about what is "HOT" and what is, well nasty. And I find it quite interesting that people have such varying taste when it comes down to it. For example: Think about this, there are how many billions of people on earth? I don't even know, but the exact number is not the point here. The point here is that there are A LOT of goddamn people in the world. And why are there so many people? Procreation. And why is there procreation? Biology. And it is a main factor in biology, sort of a survival of the fittest, that the most "attractive" (i.e. the ones with the best genes) are those who will reproduce and keep the species alive. Now, I understand that babies are born out of circumstances that do not quite fit in to this logic, with arranged marriages or even rapes, but the point is that a great deal of children are born because their parents thought each other attractive. So it comes back to taste. What I think is beautiful or attractive, or HOT is not neccesarily what you think is beautiful, or attractive, or HOT. I sat with my ex and a friend of ours last night and looked at some Maxim rip-off with the 125 sexiest women in it. Ex-boyfriend said he'd "bone them all," friend said this one, or that one, but euw she's "hideous," I picked out like five who were semi-attractive (this just proves that I am far to picky to be a lesbian). It was interesting, though, to see the difference in our taste, given I am not attracted to girls in the first place, but I can still appreciate beauty. So I guess I wonder, if you're "HOT" how much does that really matter? I figure no matter what you look like there's bound to be someone who's into your "look." I base this on the freakish obsession I had with side show freaks and their history when I was a little kid (okay, so I'm still obsessed, I know its weird.). Almost every famous, legendary (whatever) side show freak was married or fathered (mothered?) several children. Fat ladies, the worm, siamese twins (those were freaky), men and women alike who were missing appendages or had a few extra... See, herein lies my point. Someone found these people attractive. Dispite the fact that they were known purely for being the oddities that they were, someone (actually quite a few someones) thought they were beautiful. So is it physical? Did someone just think, "Damn that extra head you have there sure is HOT!" Or does someones HOTness also come from personality? And I think that varies too. I'm not really sure what conclusion I can put on this. It's odd how the things I find least attractive about myself certain people tell me are so gorgeous or, to use our favorite word for today again, so HOT. It's just interesting I think how one word that is used to convey this certain thing can be used to describe so many different things. I can't decide if it's refreshing or depressing... |
