This morning things didn't go quite so smoothly getting ready to go to the show. I thought I was all prepared, but had to make 2 trips back to the house for forgotten items. Then I had to find someone as a car was blocking the road. Stopping off at the common as usual I found I had forgotten to check the front tyres. The steering felt a bit heavy, and one tyres loses a little air every few weeks where it fits onto the rim. I tried to pump it up and the foot pump I carry wasn't working anymore. |
However Barney quickly toileted, and we set off without the usual wait for the traffic to clear joining the main road. When I had gone a little way, I realized I had taken the wrong road. I was so used to going this way now, that had forgotten where I was going, however it was only a slight detour as it heads in the general direction, so it wasn't worth going back, and we were in plenty of time. |
I stopped to top up with fuel, and blow the front tyres up. When I drew up to the fuel pump, a car parked in front of me at the airline for checking tyres. When I returned from paying, the car was still there, less occupant. I parked behind, finding the airline long enough, and was just checking the second tyre when he came out. He said 'are you going to be long' a little abruptly, and when I didn't immediately move he said 'you are blocking me in'. As I have said in the past, I have given up with humans. He came in, parked blocking the access to the facilities, then when I still manage he blames me for delaying him. A very small thing, and would not be worth commenting on, if it had not been for the fact that I go to dog shows primarily to get away from this rudeness and ignorance. |
It was the only small event of the journey, and we arrived, finding the route well signposted and leading us straight to the venue. Several people were already there. We had the usual pleasant greetings and chatted to some of our friends for a while. I went to book in, and 2 young girls took to petting Barney. After introducing myself, I said they could take him in for a class if they wanted. They lived locally, and had only come for a look without a dog. |
The show started and the SCAMPS heats were first. There were only a few small dogs in all the classes except ours...typical. There were 21 dogs in the over 18" dog class, and 4 in the bitches. When I had Jessie there were more bitches than dogs. We weren't picked in the final lineup, so I accepted another blank day. I don't mind at all for myself, but had promised the girls a rosette if he won one. One of the girls took him in as we had planned and did not get picked. We went over to the fastest recall, and put a decent time up. Then back into the ring for the next class. She picked us first; the girls were delighted when I left the ring. |
We won the Lurcher class fastest recall as well, which I'm a little pleased about, as there were quite a lot there, and I think they all had a go. I gave the girls a rosette each, one from another show and they left very happy, with a nice, polite thank you. They had enjoyed their day. There were 48 dogs there, just right and as most have more than one dog, there was enough time to go around and have a chat with everyone, which as I keep saying it the purpose of going. The weather stayed dry, without being too hot. |
We had a pleasant journey home, finishing with fish and chips for tea to celebrate. Another smashing time at a show.
