DDT--Malaria Connection

  • Many developed countries such as the United States and the World Wildlife Fund proposed a strict ban on all uses of DDT by 2007.

  • Opponents to the ban include 370 medical researchers (3 are Nobel laureates) and 57 countries.

  • DDT is currently banned in the U.S.

  • DDT is the most effective and cheapest pesticide available for malaria control.

  • According to a study done in the UK, DDT is safer than many of the other chemical pesticides. No toxicity has been found for people living in DDT-sprayed dwellings or DDT sprayers.

  • Ecuador is a unique country because it has increased its use of DDT since 1993 and has seen a 60% decline of new malaria cases.

  • Paraguay, Bolivia, and Peru have all stopped using DDT six years ago and there is an increase of 90% new malaria cases.

  • There is a worldwide trend, as DDT use decreases, malaria cases increase.

DDT is a very cheap and effective insecticide.

A worldwide ban on DDT would kill millions of people in under--developed countries.
