Kiskatinaw River Provincial Park

animated BC Provincial Flag

British Columbia, Canada

-Yours truly

While travelling along the Alaska Highway exit from the mainstream of traffic at Km 28 north of Dawson Creek on to the original Alaska Highway. As you approach the Kiskatinaw River, you will want to stop at Kiskatinaw Provincial Park to enjoy the tranquillity of the campground nestled in a secluded valley of rolling hills

This beautiful park carved into a treed hillside overlooks the Kiskatinaw River. The 28 sites with picnic tables and fire rings are arranged for you to view the splendour of a small portion of British Columbia's magnificent wilderness the same way as those men who cleared the road site and constructed the Alaska Highway in 1942.

Clicking on this photo whisks you off to another site to view
more of God's splendor. the BACK button will transport you back to here

The park area offers tangible evidence of an era long past. Stroll along the trail that leads to the famous Kiskatinaw River Bridge - the only curved and banked trestle bridge in all of western Canada. This 3-span timber-truss structure of 55 years ago still stands as originally completed in 1943. It was the first of its kind in Canada. Experience the wonder of a bridge deck that was built on a nine-degree curve with an elevation of nearly two feet to accommodate the curvature of the river. This 3-span timber-truss structure of 50 years ago was the first of its kind in Canada.

The river, itself, follows a "hairpin-bend" through a horseshoe-shaped canyon with steep concave banks reaching to a height of almost 400 feet above the river's surface.

This warm and inviting campsite, open from May to October, hosts an abundance of wildlife to delight everyone. Listen to the songbird's melody and the squirrel's lively chatter. Listen for the beautiful bugle call of the elk during the fall mating season. You might even spot a white-tailed deer or a moose. Even the odd black bear roams through patrolling its territory.

I picked this from a site with a number of uncopyrighted pictures. If this belongs to someone who has the "rights" to it, please advise me and I will give credit to whom the credit is due, or upon your request, remove it immediately. Thank-you.

Experience the evening stillness that blankets the area in complete peacefulness. From your back door, listen and relax to the soothing babble of the Kiskatinaw River waters as they follow their course over a rock-strewn bed. Hear the whispering of the aspens when the gentle breezes waft through their tops. It is easy to see, while you watch their leaves, why they are called "Trembling" aspen.

Kiskatinaw Provincial Park campground provides the basics (firewood, water supply, outhouses) for day use or overnight camping. This is a perfect spot to spend a few days reflecting upon the unique history of the Alaska Highway and the beauty of the Kiskatinaw River area.
