The Majokos
Do you Believe in Magic,
in a young girl's heart?
"Do you belive in Magic", Loving Spoonful
Majokos are girls with magic. Okay. That may seem to be REALLY simplifying it, but that's about it. Majoko's are ALWAYS female, and never male. Not that males can't have magic, but just that there are no male majoko's. Why? Because that's how Amaterasu made them, and she's the boss, apple sauce. Seriously though, one of the basic tenants from time immorial is that all Majoko's are girls, however, many mahou onna's receive a great deal of help from boys who use their magic to the same end as any majoko would. Sometimes, they can be a majoko's best freind, or more.
A majoko gains her power from her purity and her intense passions of love, innocence, and dreaming. A girl with these three traits is a prime candidate for majoko-hood, though more often than not, girls often exhibit more of one of these traits then the other two. If the magic is coming from combat training solely, or from a source of another nature, more than likely, despite the female having magic, it's NOT a majoko. Occasionaly though, these lines do get blurred.
Majokos rely on their feelings and the feelings of others to light their way, to choose where to go. Where most people belive that you should follow your head, a good majoko knows that the heart knows the only true path out of any quandry. The love and innocence held by majoko's are important components to their mahou, and thus are to be guarded by the majoko at all costs, though the way most majoko's think, maybe these emotions are not all their cracked up to be. Catch 22, I suppose. The longer you stay around, the more likely you are to find someone you just can't forgive, or find someone who makes you take your hidden desires to the next level. These can cut a Majoko off pretty quick from her mahou. And often, once the feelings have been given into, there's no going back.
The most hardest emotion to keep though is dreaming. Doldrum is a watchful enemy that always waits to catch you, but it's patient, like mold it slowly grows on a majoko, taking her piece by piece by piece. Ah...what is doldrum though? Doldrum is the slow effect that the "real" world has on the majoko. When the majoko is so shoved into real life, that she is unable to believe in the mahou of the universe, or lacks the faith in herself to use it, she becomes a victim of doldrum. Hayao Miyazaki showed an example of this well in his most wonderful animation "KiKi's Delivery Service". When Kiki becomes so saddened by the reality of the price of running her own business, and things she might lose out on for it, she loses her ability to fly, and even her faithful cat loses it's sentient ability, acting only now as a regular cat would.
These things seem like small potatoes, but the emotions of love, innocence, and dreaming are the stuff that make and break the majoko's.
And speaking of KiKi's cat, yes, we do have "familiars", though we call them guardians. Most majoko's at least have one, and often it is THESE beings that awaken the majoko's or grant them the powers in the first place. Usually its a long process of watching, but some have been know to chose after only a few minutes of watching. Then again, often, if someone else is the one granting the powers, the guardians are simply appointed their tasks, and not given a say in their charge. But that doesn't mean that they are any less protective (or critical) of the girl.
By now, you've probably figured out that there are many ways to categorize a majoko. This much is true, in more ways then one. Though majokos mostly fight for the same goal and have the same belief towards the three basic emotions, not all try to achive those goals through the same methods or put the same level of importance on certain emotions. Majokos of late have been branded into certain groups. While grouping is not always wise when dealing with something as wild and unpredictable as mahou, there DOES seem to be certain groups that developed along the ages. Some of these groups are:
- Love Girls - These girls are the embodiment of love at work, consquently, they tend to follow the aspects of love or purity. To make the world better, they spend their lives repairing broken relationships and broken hearts, anyone saddened must be lifted up from the depths of dispair to the heights of joy. They also will do any good deed to show that selfless deeds is not dead and gone. Hence, many of these majoko's spend a great deal of their time doing menial tasks (or on the other hand, dangerous tasks) simply to make someone's lives better. Their motive is to maintain the values of hope and love. Examplars of this type are Minky Momo, Creamy Mami and Pretty Sammy.
- Miracle Girls - Miracle girls are the great flash majokos, and actually, tend to have the greatest variances in ages, infact most of the majoko's under 10 years of age tend to fit here. At any rate, a miracle girl attempts to better the world through acts that, while helpful also tend to insinuate, at least indirectly, that magic is *not* dead, and in fact lives on. They tend to follow the aspect of dreaming. People must NEVER stop believing in fairy tales, and these girls work hard at it, all the while dodging people who would rather not let the modern world escape it's doldrum prison. Their motive is to make sure Humanity never forgets About Mahou. Examplars of this type are Kiki, Pastel Yumi, Magical Emi, and Oja Mahou Doremi.
- Combat Majokos - These majokos tend to resemble senshi or budo's in their actions. Combat majoko's spend most of their time fighting. Whatever enemy it may be, majoko's take on themselves to vanquish them and make the world safe once again. Generally, they do it in the name of love, which is generally not too far off the mark, as it's love for their friends and famiy that make them continually go into battle. Therefore, they follow the aspect of love mostly. However their motive eventually coincides with the end goal to preserve the Planet for the New Kingdom. This is no simple tasks, as the Youma (see the "Senshi" section further on) are not the only ones who will try to sabotage the new world order. Examplars of this type are the Wedding Peach girls, St.Tail, Tonde Burrin and Card Captor Sakura. Some also suggest the Magical Knights of Rayearth belong here.
- Dark Majokos - Ah, Dark Majokos. The fly in a majoko's ointment, the wrench in the gears. In fact, Dark majoko's seem to almost contradict the world of mahou, and yet at the same help maintain, in their own demented way. Dark Majoko's are, in a sense, polar opposites of Love Girls. They feed on negative emotions like distrust, envy, and jealousy. They attempt to use their mahou to create discorde, rather than to remove it. A dark majoko delights in just simply making other's lives miserable, particularly other majokos. The curious thing is, they seem to have some rules to them as well. Dark Majoko's tend to be overly zealous in disliking everyone, and yet often hide emotional weak spots which can be fatal when discovered by a Love Girl. Dark Majoko's also much maintain purity, despite insinuations otherwise, no dark majoko can lose her innocence and keep her mahou. Another humerous fact is that they can follow the aspects of love, dreaming or purity, and not even realize it. And in the end their motives tend to run along the lines of making sure Humanity never forgets About Mahou, and preserving the Planet for the New Kingdom. Dark Majokos are myth inside a conundrum, and half the time, they can't even figure their own purpose out. Examples of this are Pixa Misa and Sayoko(from Galaxy Fraulein Yuna).
- Others - Sometimes a girl proves herself to be a majoko, even though she doesn't seem to fit the average profile of one of the types of majokos. A very good example is the group of girls working under Galaxy Fraulein Yuna, who despite using a great deal of mecha, also have magic that emanates souly from their hearts, and, in some cases, purity. (We won't discuss Yuna's purity or lack thereof, but her love for others makes up for it) These have been termed "mecha majokos", however aside from them, and a recent addition of a strange girl named Digi Charat, there are not a lot around to make an actual group. Needless to say, any girl who gets lumped in the other category may follow any of the aspects and motives, depending on the girl.
