Hero's
Quest/Quest for Glory Series
1989,
1990, 1992, 1993 - Sierra
Disclaimer:
I know there is a 5th game in this series, but since it came out
long after the original 4, I have never gotten around to playing
it. I heard it sucked anyway!
I
have one of my friends to thank for this classic series(Casey or
Adam?). In junior high, one of my friends handed me a 3.5"
disk with no label on it and told me to try this out. On that disk
I found Hero's Quest I and I tried it out. In a matter of days,
all my friends were playing this game trying to finish it. I remember
I chose the fighter charcater the first time out. We all wanted
to see who could finish the game first. Since this was back in the
day when there were no internet walkthroughs and such, we he to
actually figure the game out. It was more of a challenge since it
was the old sierra interface where you have to type in the commands
by hand, so you could type virtually anything. I'm proud to say
that I think I finished it first, but with only a score of about
300 out of 500, so I know I missed a lot! Im sure I rescued the
prince, but I know for a fact that I didnt get rid of Baba Yaga
or do any Erasmus quests. I know Im going to get some dirty emails
from my friends on this hehe.
So
was that the end of QFG I? No way, now we had the competition to
get the highest score! For this I chose the thief and to make a
long story short, I believe my best score was around 493 out of
500. I could never find those elusive points.
It
wasnt too long after we had all finished QFG I that Casey borrowed
a copy of QFG II from his cousin and I had to beg him for a week
to take it home. He wouldn't let me borrow it because it wasn't
his in the first place, bah. I was able to convince him though since
he is so impressionable. The coolest part was being able to import
your character from the first into the 2nd. This game was a little
bit different in that it was about over twice as long as the first,
and so probably twice as difficukt to figure out what to do. I know
it took me a long time to finish this one and Im not too sure that
all of my friends did. My best score I think was in the upper 400s,
but I know I never got the full 500.
I
know I went out and bought QFG III almost right away. This game
was vastly different because of the new SVGA interface with point
and click, no more guessing the correct phrases to succeed. Was
this a good thing? The game sure was pretty, but it was also much
easier. I know by this time, The QFG crew was down to 3 of us, Me,
Casey, and Jason. The 3rd one didnt prove too difficult mostly because
we had great characters from the first two games that imported.
It was mostly straight forward and we finished it quite fast as
it was shorter than II. I know we all had the full 500 points...I
don't think it was possible to finish it with less. That cut down
on the replayability.
I
happened upon QFG IV by borrowing it from a guy named Shawn..and
I never saw him again, thats life I guess. Anyway, 4 proved to be
more of a challenge than III. I can't really compare the length
because the game is a little foggy to me, but it definately wasn't
as long and tedious as II, but I think it was longer than I &
III. I still think Im only one of my group to finish 4, mostly because
of bugs that caused their games to crash. Once again, 500 points.
After
all 4 had been played through with all the characters, there were
times I did 'QFG' marathons. Probably once a year until I graduated
High School, I would set a Saturday aside and start at I and finish
up III by the evening. The QFG series definately touched me as a
great adventure/RPG with a well written story. Im sure I will get
the 5th one someday! Thank you Lori and Corey Cole for such a wonderful
world and thanks to Sierra for allowing them to make it!
