The Protocol

protocol (n): conventions, formalities, customs, procedure, ritual, code of behavior, accepted behavior, conventionalities, propriety, one's Ps and Qs, decorum, manners, courtesies, civilities, good form, the done thing, the thing to do, punctilio; French politesse.

Gorean (adj.): of or pertaining to lifestyle and role-play practices based on John Norman's 1970s series of Science Fantasy novels about the planet Gor. In the series, the author posited the planet Gor in the same orbit as Earth, but on the opposite side of the sun and thus invisible from Earth. Human society on Gor, under the overall rule of non-earthly beings called "priest kings" and stocked by a continuing series of kidnapees from earth, has developed to about mid-Roman Empire stage.

It's highly male-dominant and often violent, with slavery the norm for most women. There are, of course, also some Free Women as well as Free Men, plus male slaves (kajirus - plural: kajirii) as well as female (kajiraa - plural kajirae). The concept of Honor is considered the highest attribute of all. On Gor, the word for 'stranger' is the same as the word for 'enemy.'

Norman's original series consisted of 25 novels. A 26th was published in 2002. They are sometimes available at used booksellers and/or through E-Bay on the Web.

Those seeking further information about Gor and Gorean practices are encouraged to do a Google or Yahoo! search for "Gor" or "Gorean." There are many Gorean role-play chatrooms on the internet, most of which have voluminous pages of information attached to them.

Consider the alt.com Gorean Room as an Earthbound chatroom -similar, for example, to the frequent flyer lounges the airlines run - where those of lifestyle (or r/t for real-time) and online Gorean background can gather and chat on a variety of subjects and provide an initial welcome for those with no Gorean knowledge. It should not be thought of as a Gorean role-play room, although role-play is certainly allowed.

Initially, this was to be a short list of standards of behavior for the Gorean Room. It grew. What follows are not "rules." Rather, they are My take on what should be the customs of expected behavior in the alt.com Gorean room. They're written from My personal point of view, with input from several others.

The protocols are divided into three sections: customs governing general behavior of A/all; those governing behavior of Frees and those for slaves.

GENERAL BEHAVIOR

  1. "When thou enter a city, abide by its customs." The most important word governing behavior of those following Gorean ways is "Honor." A/all - Free and slave alike - should act honorably to one another at all times.
  2. Respect is to be shown by A/all to A/all. There should be no controversy between r/t and online Gor. There will be no tolerance for the "I'm more Gorean than thou" attitude. Nor is there a "Gor is Gor; be Gorean or be gone" sign posted on the doorway.
  3. At any given time, the room may be populated by Free Men and Free Women of any Gorean Caste and from any Gorean city, town or wagon camp "Home Stone;" male and female slaves; Panther Girls; Red Savages; Gypsies and non-Goreans. A/all are welcome.
  4. Trolls and trolling, on the other hand, are no more welcome here than in other alt.com rooms.
  5. We will not always "follow the books as closely as possible."
  6. This room is a peaceful sanctuary. There is to be no raiding, killing, kidnapping, force-collaring, capturing of slaves who have left Gor role-play sites, or use of weapons (other than alt.com's 'ignore' switch) in anger. Serious arguments should be removed to the brawl room or dealt with via private Instant Messaging.
  7. Newcomers with no knowledge of Gor or Gorean ways are welcome. Those expressing curiosity about the subject should be treated politely and offered information. Those who enter to fight or to denigrate Gor and its ways should be ignored.
  8. For clarity, the name of the person being addressed should be used in every post as an aid to following conversations. (example: "LLazarus > body of post, which may or may not include the name")
  9. Due to the wide variance in custom among the many online Gorean chatrooms, not to mention r/t Gorean relationships, each couple will create and express their own relationship in accordance with their own customs.
  10. While the room is not, strictly speaking, a role-play site, a certain amount of role-play is anticipated.
  11. Scening or cyber sex should be restricted to other alt.com rooms or to IM. Assignations for such trysts certainly may be made in the Gorean Room. Several persons have expressed objection to open or public scening or sexual activity, even though it may be permitted in many Gorean role-play sites, not to mention r/t Gorean and BDSM play parties and/or clubs.

BEHAVIOR OF FREES

  1. . Unlike usual Gorean practice, where Frees may demand sexual service from any slave, at their whim unless the slave is restricted by their owner, slaves in the Earthbound alt.com Gorean room may not be Gorean in that sense, but rather they may be D/s submissives or switches who are visiting; thus, they have the right to say "no" respectfully. Frees are expected to respect that refusal.
  2. Your attention should be on the specific slave creating a serve to bring you beverage or food. It's polite, not to mention encouraging, to post expressions of your notice of the effort the slave is making. If you MUST correct the slave (for neglecting to take three backsteps before turning from you to head for the servery for instance), do so in a positive manner.
  3. Spars and duels may be arranged among Free Men and conducted within the room, using Gorean weapons and with rules agreed upon between the parties beforehand. There are to be no death duels.
  4. Members of the Assassins' Caste are notified that the alt.com Gorean Room is an earthbound sanctuary. Kills will not be recognized.
  5. Frees may be garbed in robes or other clothing, as they wish, and shod in boots, shoes or sandals.
  6. Frees may claim status according to the Gorean Caste system or not, as they wish.
  7. Frees should make the extra effort to greet and welcome those entering, especially those they spot as new to the Gorean room.

BEHAVIOR OF SLAVES

  1. Unless requested otherwise by the individual Free, or unless commanded otherwise by a slave's personal owner, slaves should address all Frees in the room as Master or Mistress "Name," as is the custom of Gorean etiquette. Use of the term Master or Mistress as a stand-alone title should be restricted to the individual slave/submissive's personal owner.
  2. On Gor, there's no such thing as an uncollared slave. (s)he's either force-collared or killed. Neither is the concept of "switch" known on Gor. However, alt.com's Gorean room is not on Gor; it's on Earth. Thus, the phenomenon of uncollared slaves is accepted. Switches should choose which side of their personality is appropriate for this room, and stick with it. There are no submissives on Gor; one is either Free or slave.
  3. slaves may "karta" and beg entrance before beginning their interaction with O/others in the room. They may do so simply, without overwriting the description. The same holds true for asking permission to leave. It's expected that most slaves with Gorean training will ask permission to enter or leave, and that newcomers probably will not. Karta should not be a criterion for whether a slave is welcomed or accepted.
  4. slaves may describe the position in which they kneel, or not, at their discretion or according to the direction of their personal Master/Mistress. Such description may be simply to say "kneels in nadu" or tower or whatever. This is not meant to restrict the individual slave from describing significant details of their kneeling position, such as hands resting palms up or down, etc.
  5. Descriptive language relating to service of food and beverage shall be up to the standards of each individual kajira's Gorean Home, although serves should be fairly brief. The Gorean Room is an enclosed space within a city environment; thus, there is a servery, rather than the serving wagon customary among the camps of Wagon Peoples such as the Tuchuks or Kassars.
  6. Use of the Gorean language - Kassarian - is not required. Nor is the language used among various Red Savage chatsites. Those comfortable with such languages are welcome to use them, in which case the Gorean phrase should be followed by a translation to English.
  7. Slaves are not required to refer to themselves in third person.
  8. Role-playing slaves may be garbed in a variety of role-play ways. By the customs of each individual slave and Master, pleasure slave silks; kettle slave camisks; "clad kajir" in the customary koora, kalmark, curla and chatka according to Wagon People standards; wearing earthly clothing, or unclothed are all acceptable. As is the presence of a brand or other marking.
  9. slaves should greet others in the room in this order: their personal Master or Mistress; Free Males; Free Women; other slaves.
  10. slaves will not handle weapons or other sharp instruments during role-play activity, except under direct supervision of a Free.
