Auckland put on a traditional mix of 4 seasons in 1 day with some fantastic sunshine and windy wet conditions. Despite this the day was a huge success with an unprecedented number of close games and spectacular rallies.
In the womens final it was the experience of Preston and Tung that was the telling factor where they learned from their earlier close game against their finals opposition where although they were victorious it was a closer affair.
In the Mens final Jones and Anstett just couldn’t get up for their 7th game of the day after losing in the 2nd round to overcome the power and finesse of the O’Dea and Watson combination. Watson could do nothing wrong never loosing a single set of volleyball or paper / rock / scissors challenge all day.
Most impressive, however, was the number of young mens teams made up mostly of National Age group representatives that are coming through to challenge the older more experienced players.

Mens             Semifinal 1:       O’Dea and Watson (1st seed) played O’dea and Peters (2nd seed)
Winner:       O’dea and Watson 21 – 11, 21-14
                      Semifinal 2:             Shaw and Shanks (5th seed) played Jones and Anstett (3rd seed)
Winner:       Jones and Anstett 16 – 21, 23 – 21, 15-12

GF O’Dea and Watson defeated Jones and Anstett 2-0 ( 21 , 13 ) ( 21 , 15 )

Womens             Semifinal 1:       Preston and Tung (1st seed) played Archbold and Horobin (2nd seed)
Winner:       Preston and Tung 15 – 8, 15 -11
                          Semifinal 2:             Cook and McCormack (3rd seed) played MacDowell and Albertson (4th seed)
Winner:       MacDowell and Albertson 15 – 8, 15 – 11, 15 - 8

GF Preston and Tung defeated McDowell and Albertson 2- 0 ( 21 , 13 ) (21 ,17 )

Next event at the Mairangi Bay Beach Centre is a social 2 a side event on Labour Weekend Sunday followed up by the North Harbour Secondary School Championships the Saturday after.
