Harry Potter

Despite the controversies that plagued J.K Rowling's Harry Potter novels, the movies Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, directed by Chris Colunbus came out as a huge success, earning pesos. J.K Rowling captivated the hearts of the readers as she unfolds the story of an orphan who lived most of his life abused by his remaining relatives and discovers on his 11th birthday that he belongs to the world of wizards and witches.

Harry Potter finds himself famous in a world he never, in his wildest imaginings, thought existed. He, a scrawny little kid with round rimmed glasses, was caused of the downfall of one of the world's most wicked wizards, Lord Voldemort. As he boards the train for Horwarts at flatfrom 9 and 3/4 he meets his two best friends. Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.

This is a story of friendship that prevails like a family through troubles and pains. It also is a story of courage as it shoes how the three pals became heroes as they pursued their search of the sorcerer's stone. On the other hand, the ideologies presented in the story seem questionable, as Professor Quirrel mentioned in the final chapters, that: "That there is no good and evil, only power..." To an uncritical mind, this may seem true as good and evil might be claimed as relative to an individual's belief:what you think is good is god and what you think is wrong is wrong. But truth and goodness is absolute and they are found in God.

The general theme of the novels are also very much cited by the critics as against the church. The practice of witchcraft is a violation of the First Commandment because it disregards God's supremacy as it uses magic. But as is always said, the readers must always analyze the materials they read and the movies they see. Consciousness defeats subtle manipulations which intentinal or not are injected in reading materials and movies. We have to be critical lest these influence us wrongly.
