My three weeks in Cuba

Our Journey

After arriving in Havana, we left for the beautiful town of Vinales (Pinar Del Rio), then back to Havana to meet Eamon, then to Varadero for a few days on the golden beach (not the touristy bit), from where we travelled to Trinidad, before leaving Eamon and Lucy and heading back to Havana and catching a depressing flight back to Britain ( the end).

Wow - this is one amazing island... me and my friends Blake , Caroline, Daniel and Lucy left on the 28th June 2000 and arrived in Havana on one of the biggest days in their recent history, although we were partially unaware at the time. Remember Elian Gonzalez? If not, he's the Cuban kid caught in the power struggle between Cuba and the US, and on the day we arrived in the country, he too arrived from the States amid massive celebration. We watched on TV as the young boy took his tentative steps off the plane at the airport, and with his father became the most loved citizen in the country for the next few days.

To many Cubans Elian was a symbol of victory in their ongoing battle to survive despite the problems caused by the embargo imposed by the US. We spoke to people about how they felt about the current situation, and recieved varied responses. The people of Cuba deserve more than this website; their way of life due to Fidel and the treatment from the US cannot easily be described - but i regard them as genuinely the most pleasant, colourful and amazing humans I have ever met.

I have also made a quick Hints page, giving you the basics of what you should expect in Cuba, how to get around, where to stay and what to do etc. And check out some other Cuba webpages in my links page
