TIMBER
Timber was sent by water from Knepp  Park in the 1180's to Southampton, for use in the building of a Royal  Hunting Lodge.
1214 The Foresters of Knepp  were ordered to prepare timber for use in building Dover Castle.
First built by William of Normandy in 1066 and rebuilt  between 1179 and 1188 by Henry 11 and completed in the mid thirteenth century.
1216 they were asked to  construct siege engines to be sent to Dover Castle.
it was in this year that Prince Louis landed a French army  at Thanet and Dover Castle was put to its first major test
1313 the Oaks of Shipley were  used to make shingles for Westminster Hall in London..
Westminster Hall was the  residence of kings from the 11th century until 1513,  originally built by william Rufus between 1097 and 1099and later used for coronation feasts, it was the seat of Royal Government.
The First English Parliament was held there in 1265 and  later it was the place where Charles 1st and Guy Fawkes were put on trial
1778 Lord Nelson'sVictory was commissioned at Chatham Dock Yard, Oak from Hoe's Farm in Shipley was said to  used in its making. The Victory was in service for  32 years and retired in Portsmouth harbour in 1812
The Central shaft of Shipley Mill  was also said to have come from Hoe's Farms  woodlands.
The timber industry of Shipley  recorded the name Carpenter first in 1248
A Cleaver was known in 1397
In 1581 more Carpenters were employed and again in 1655 and 1707
In 1810 there were six Carpenters and a wheelwright.
The Timber Yard was on the Horsham  to Worthing Road and from  1896 to 1909 there was also a saw mill. the  first Timber Merchant was recorded in 1874..
