EDUCATION.
1553 A Curate left money for  the young children going to school
1589 A School Master was  licensed to teach in Shipley
1817 there was a school master
1819 25 poor children. were  taught at the parishes expense
1838. work house children were  taught to read
1818/1833 there were four day  schools all run by women, having a total of 78 pupils
1825 Sarah Andrew left �40.00.  00d a year for the free education of Shipley's poor children.
1827 A school house and  Masters House was built North of the Church 67 boys attended.
1837 the school had 40 pupils.  Poverty made attendance irregular.
1849 there were two schools as  well as the National School
1851 A girls School opened in  a building erected by Sir Charles Burrell and Mrs Vernon Harcourt
1872 the Girls and Boys  Schools were managed together
1876 a new brick built school  was erected and is still in use  http://www.shipley.w-sussex.sch.uk/
